Hemichordata (Enteropneusta & Pterobranchia, incl. Graptolithina): A review of their fossil preservation as organic material

Abstract: Fossil preservation has been discussed at length in nu merous publications, but still many details are unclear or have not been considered. It is usually discussed in relation to individual fossil groups (e.g. bacteria, brachiopods, graptolites, plants, trilobites, vertebrates) or types of fossil lagerstätten (cf. Seilacher 1970). In the Hemichordata, the preservation of the fossils is especially important, as the involved materials differ considerably between the two groups, the Enteropneusta (Fig. 1A) and th… Show more

“…While the budding pattern may suggest hemichordatan affinity 36 , the EDS analysis did not reveal any signs of phosphorus. Phosphorus presence could suggest chitinous remains 37 , and organic tubes are typical for hemichordates 38 , which are often preserved as carbonized remains 39 , 40 . Also, hemichordates, such as graptolites, have their thecae much smaller than in the material discussed here.…”

“…The graptolite specimens used in the present study were sampled from poorly consolidated black or dark grey silty argillite. Many of them are fragmentary and most are variably affected by diagenetic flattening, such that the tubaria are commonly represented as dull black silhouettes that may sometimes show interthecal septa, etc., but sometimes, when weathered, may form a rusty film (see Maletz, 2020). The periderm may flake away, leaving an external mould in low relief that could be cast using rubber latex.…”
