Hemibranchiate sphaeromatids (Crustacea: Isopoda) from Queensland, Australia, with a world-wide review of the genera discussed

Abstract: All known Queensland species of the isopod family Sphaeromatidae, subfamily Sphaeromatinae (= hemibranchs), are discussed. The following new taxa are erected: Calcipila cornuta, gen. nov., sp. nov.; Cymodoce tribullis, sp. nov.; Cymodoce bipapilla, sp. nov.; Paracilicaea aspera, sp. nov.; Cilicaeopsis glebosa, sp. nov.; Cilicaeopsis furculata, sp. nov.; Cilicaea calcarifera, sp. nov.; Zuzara curtispina, sp. nov.; Zuzara digitata, sp. nov.; and Clianella brucei, sp. nov.Exosphaeroma intermedium Baker is transfe… Show more

“…Unlike all other species of the genus, S. terebrans lacks an appendix masculina (Harrison & Holdich, 1984;Harrison & Ellis, 1991). The absence of an appendix masculina, the apparent absence of males in open waters, and the fact that S. terebrans practises precopulatory mate guarding (pers.…”

“…In the Sphaeromatidae the reportedly polymorphic Paracassidina pectinata (Baker, 1911) (Holdich and Harrison 1981) proved to be six species (Bruce 1994), and a similar swarm of species exists within the genus Oxinasphaera (Bruce 1997). Th e purportedly highly variable Cilicaeopis whiteleggei (Stebbing, 1905) (see Harrison and Holdich 1984), known to occur throughout the Indo-West Pacifi c from East Africa to Fiji, will likely prove to be another such species complex. Within the Cirolanidae Cirolana parva Hansen, 1890 was once considered to be one world-wide species, but is a large swarm of 25 described species that have an extremely uniform morphology (e.g.…”

“…Populations of Sphaeroma are usually found within the brackish regions of estuaries (Harrison and Holdich 1984, Murata and Wada 2002, Davidson 2008 but are known to tolerate extreme temperatures and a wide range of salinities (Riegel 1959, Jansen 1971). The temperate species S. quoianum is widely distributed throughout the intertidal and most prevalent between salinities of 5-31 PSU in Coos Bay, Oregon, Tamar estuary, Tasmania, and Port Phillip Bay, Australia (Davidson et al 2008b).…”

“…Burrowing sphaeromatid isopods (native to the Indo and West Pacific; Carlton and Iverson 1981, Harrison and Holdich 1984, Carlton and Ruckelshaus 1997 bore into numerous substrata used in marine structures and facilities in temperate and tropical regions (Chilton 1919, Kofoid and Miller 1927, Carlton 1979. These borers are especially destructive to expanded polystyrene floats (commonly known as Styrofoam) used in many docks.…”
