Heme Oxygenase-1 Reduces Sepsis-Induced Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress and Acute Lung Injury

Abstract: Background Sepsis leads to severe acute lung injury/acute respiratory distress syndrome (ALI/ARDS) that is associated with enhanced endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), an ER-anchored protein, exerts antioxidant and protective functions under ALI. However, the role of HO-1 activation in the development of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress during sepsis remains unknown. Methods Cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) model was created to induce septic ALI. Lung tissue ER stress was measured 18 … Show more

“…The majority of free radicals observed are superoxide (O 2 − ), hydroxyl (OH − ), hydroperoxide (HO 2 − ), nitric oxide (NO • ), and nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 • ). Among these, the hydroxyl radical is the most reactive in the induction of cellular lesions and hydrogen peroxide can cross the nuclear membrane and induce damage in the DNA molecule [ 119 , 120 ].…”

“…23,24 Previous studies have demonstrated that ERS response played an important role in apoptosis in sepsis cells. 25,26 However, it is not clear whether ERS is involved in the function of miR-547 in sepsis-induced ALI.…”

“…there several studies indicating its positive role in treatment of sepsis [44,45]. Considering future directions, it could be proposed that search for epigenetic modulators of ensemble gene noise might represent a novel pharmaceutical avenue for adjuvant treatments of sepsis.…”
