Heme oxygenase-1 induction in the brain during lipopolysaccharide-induced acute inflammation

Abstract: Delirium occurs in 23% of sepsis patients, in which pro-infl ammatory cytokines and nitric oxide are suggested to be involved. However, in animal experiments, even a subseptic dose of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) injection induces both pro-infl ammatory cytokines and inducible nitric oxide synthase in the brain, suggesting that the brain oxidative reaction can be induced in the subseptic condition. Then, we evaluated the changes of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), a sensitive oxidative marker, as well as interleukin (IL)-… Show more

“…1d). Our findings are similar to results obtained in adult animals, in which a subseptic dose of LPS induced HO-1 mRNA in the hippocampus and hypothalamus (Maeda et al 2008). HO-1 is also induced in other highly vascularized tissues, such as heart and lung by systemic LPS (Wiesel et al 2000).…”

“…Further, strong induction of HO-1, detectable with western blot analysis, is usually highest at time points less than 24 h after stress (hyperthermia, ischemia, etc.) [49,50]. Therefore, the finding in the present study, that HO-1 dot blot analysis of total brain homogenate from aged animals undergoing chronic rather than acute stress shows insignificant differences, is not unexpected.…”
