“…In addition to the promptness of detection, determination of the viral load is valuable because it may have predictive value for disseminated adenoviral disease (Claas et al 2005;Lion et al 2003). In viral hemorrhagic cystitis with concomitant signs of disseminated infection, real-time PCR technique may also benefit in discrimination between infections caused by adenoviruses, polyomavirus BK and herpes simplex viruses, with regard to different treatment strategies used in infections with these viruses (Bil-Lula et al 2010a). Infections caused by adenoviruses should be also included in the differential diagnosis of a wide variety of clinical syndromes, including pneumonia, enteritis, hemorrhagic cystitis, conjunctivitis, and disseminated disease.…”

“…Polymerase chain reaction (PCR), as well as its variant, real-time PCR (qPCR), has become a valuable tool for the detection of adenoviral DNA due to its speed, specificity, and sensitivity which allow for early diagnosis (Bil-Lula et al 2010a;Rola et al 2007). Quantitative or semiquantitative PCR assays allow also monitoring of the kinetics of the viral infection or effectiveness of antiviral treatment (Claas et al 2005).…”

“…A screening examination of all clinical samples was performed with singleplex qualitative PCR assays, described previously [9]. Briefly, assays consist of HotStarTaq Master Mix Kit (QIAagen GmbH, Germany), forward and reverse primers (0.5 µM final conc.…”

“…Although HAdV infections in immunocompetent subjects are usually asymptomatic and self-limiting, the recipients of HSCTs and other immunocompromised patients present a broad spectrum of clinical manifestations. They can cause a range of infections from asymptomatic to localized or disseminated [3], including acute respiratory disease [7, 8], keratoconjunctivitis [8], pharyngeal–conjunctival fever [1] and hemorrhagic cystitis [7, 9]. Less frequent complications are arthritis, encephalitis [10, 11], gastroenteritis [12, 13] and hepatitis [7, 14].…”

“…45 Patients with adenovirus nephritis present with fever, gross hematuria and AKI; most have detectable adenovirus in their urine. Adenovirus cystitis is a more frequent but less morbid complication of adenovirus infection that has been witnessed in up to 15% of HCT recipients 46 and usually manifests within the first 2 months following the transplant. Isolated case reports 47,48 of successful treatment of adenovirus cystitis with IV or intravesical administration of cidofovir have been described; however, supportive care is usually the recommended treatment.…”
