Pawpaw seed meal (PSM) can be used as an antifertility agent in animals, however there is no information on its potential toxicological effect on Mozambique tilapia (O. mossambicus). In this study the effect of PSM on the liver, blood haematological and biochemical parameters of O. mossambicus juveniles was assessed to ascertain its suitability as a reproductive suppressant. The PSM was administered at an inclusion level of 10 g and 30 g/kg of a commercial tilapia diet (basal diet, BD) for 30 and 60 days, respectively. The potential toxicological effect was assessed by determining the extent of change in the normal haematological (RBC count, haematocrit, haemoglobin, MCV, MCH, MCHC, thrombocyte count, absolute WBC and differential cell counts) and biochemical (cholesterol, total protein, albumin, globulin and glucose) parameters. Haematological and biochemical profiles of different treatment groups did not differ throughout the course of the investigation. Liver weight and hepatosomatic index values of the treated fish were comparable to those of the control. The absence of any effect of the blood parameters measured in this study also indicate that PSM has no compromising influence on the immune system of the fish, indicating that PSM can be considered as a safe alternative to induce masculinization in Mozambique tilapia, and therefore act as a reproductive inhibitor.

-1 ) for 28days in fifteen aquarium tanks (30×30×20cm 3 ). Resultant fingerlings were maintained in outdoor concrete tanks (1×1×1m 3 ) for 140days till they gained an average weight of 30g. Haematological analysis and gonad histology was done to determent the effect of the PSM on the fish. Haematological changes observed in this study did not revealed detrimental effect of feeding of PSM. However, histological evaluation of the gonads showed various degrees of deformities and tends to increase in severity as the levels of PMS increased. It was concluded that PSM might not affect the health status of the Nile tilapia but lead to sterility of the fish.

One of the important issues in catfish farming is motile aeromonad septicaemia (MAS) disease caused by the bacterium Aeromonas hydrophila. This study aimed to find the MHC-II marker potential for marker-based selection to generate MAS disease resistance of African catfish. PCR method was applied to identify catfish (body length: 7-8 cm) population that have MHC-II marker. Fish with and without the marker were then challenged by intraperitonially injecting of 0.1 mL/fish with A. hydrophila (10 5 cfu/mL). The results showed that the survival of fish having MHC-II marker (77.50 ± 4.00%) was higher than that of fish without the marker (53.33 ± 4.77%). Fish carrying MHC-II marker fish has also higher total erythrocytes, total leukocytes, phagocytic activity, and hematocrit levels than that of fish without the marker. The PCR results using specific primer for MHC-II showed a specific DNA band of 426 bp in fish having the marker, while there were no DNA bands in fish without the marker. Results of the PCR analyses showed that the percentage of progenies carrying MHC-II marker was 80%, while progenies from broodstock without the marker was 0%; this indicated that MHC-II marker could be inherited to the offsprings. Thus, the MHC-II marker could be used as a molecular marker of MAS disease resistance catfish.
