Hematological parameters of Iranian cichlid Iranocichla hormuzensis: Coad, 1982 (Perciformes) in Mehran River

Abstract: This study describes the hematological parameters in Iranocichla hormuzensis, an Iranian freshwater cichlid important as ornamental and food fish. Forty fish were captured with seine net at Mehran river Hormozgan province, Iran. Blood was used to determine the total counts of red blood cells (RBC) and white blood cells (WBC), hematocrit, mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) and morphometric data of erythrocytes. The Iranian fish show… Show more

“…Red blood cells (erythrocytes) contain haemoglobin and its main function is the transport of oxygen and carbon dioxide and abnormal changes in its number may indicate anaemia or stress (De Pedro et al, 2005). It is the most abundant cell type and has proved to be a highly variable blood parameter among fish species (Daneshvar et al, 2012). Reported values of RBC in fish include 3.53 × 10 6 /μL (range: 2.21-4.47 × 10 6 /μL) for grey mullet (Mugil cephalus) (Fazio et al, 2012b).…”

“…Hence, any significant reduction or changes in its number may be indicative of anemia or stress (De Pedro et al, 2005). It is the most abundant cell type and has proved to be a highly variable blood parameter among different fish species (Daneshvar et al, 2012) and among the same species as dictated by different environmental conditions and feed types (Solomon and Okomoda 2012). Hence, the observation of this study is suggestive that feeding of PSM may not have affected the health status of the fish significantly.…”

“…Blood profile is also useful to be direct indicators since it provides information related to tolerance to a stressor or fish disease agents such as viruses and bacteria (Daneshvar et al, 2012). Blood profile was observed before and after injection to understand fish immune response.…”
