Objectives Hematological malignancies place a significant financial and medical burden on the affected patients. Well-equipped oncology centers providing healthcare for these patients are also sparse. By studying the epidemiology of those diagnosed with hematological malignancies, it can be correlated with the outcomes and compared with global and national trends. This will allow healthcare decision-makers at all levels to make informed decisions, while allocating resources to combat hematological malignancies. This study is aimed at understanding the pattern of various hematological malignancies presenting at a tertiary care center including their clinical profile, risk factors, etiology and presentation. Material and Methods This was an observational prospective study conducted in King Edward Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, India. Patients aged 12 years and above suffering from hematological malignancies were recruited from the medical wards. The history and systemic examination findings were recorded from patients’ records. The patients were treated as per the discretion of the treating physician and all investigations advised by the treating physician were noted in the respective case record forms. Results The maximum cases were from the age group 36–50 years, i.e., 32 in number (40%), followed by the age group 51–65 years (25%). A greater number of male patients were encountered than female ones (67.5% vs 32.5%). Most of the patients were unskilled laborers followed by semi-skilled workers. Pesticide exposure was the commonest etiological factor reported in 16 (20%) patients, followed by exposure to silica that was reported in nine patients (11.25%). Conclusion The common age group to encounter hematological malignancies in patients is 36–50 years, being more prevalent among males. History of exposure to risk factors such as pesticides is commonly seen. Factors such as age and family history do not correlate with the outcome. Females tend to have a better outcome than males.

Objective: Although blood group antigens were initially identified as erythrocyte surface antigens and their significance was mainly ascribed to serology, it soon became evident that these antigens are widely distributed in human tissues such as platelets. Immunthrombocytopenia (ITP) is a common autoimmune disorder characterized by a low platelet count. In our study, we investigated the relationship between ABO and Rhesus (Rh) blood groups and primary ITP. Materials and Methods: A retrospective study was conducted at our center with 304 patients diagnosed with primary ITP and 491 blood donors. Results: ABO phenotype in patients group A, B, O, AB were 42.8%, 14,1%, 34,9% , 8.2%, respectively and 51,6%, 8,1%, 27,9%, 12,4% in the control group, respectively. Rh phenotype in patients group positive or negative 87,5%, 12,5 % respectively and 88,8%, 11,2% in the control group, respectively. A total of 304 patients with primary ITP, consisting of 203 (66,8%) females, and 101(33,2%) males were included in this study. The mean age was 49,5 ±18 years. There was no significant difference in the distribution of ABO blood types and Rh factor by gender (respectively p=0.176, p= 0.195). Conclusion: In our study, no significant difference was found between the blood group distribution in the population and the blood group distribution of patients diagnosed with primary ITP.

Background: Several studies have been conducted to evaluate and investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying alterations in ABO blood group antigens in oncogenesis. We observed that no study has been reported yet that correlate cytological, molecular and haematological responses of Imatinib therapy in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) patients with different types of blood groups. Objective: To determine the distribution of CML in the ABO blood group, clinical spectrum of CML in different blood groups, and treatment response of CML patients in correlation with ABO and Rh blood groups. Material and Methods: All the patients included in the study were diagnosed on the basis of clinical features, peripheral smears and bone marrow aspiration findings. Real-time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and cytogenetic analysis were done in all patients at the time of initiation of therapy. Blood grouping and Rh typing of each patient were done at the initiation of therapy. Results: Out of 100 included patients, 58 were male and 42 were female patients. It was observed that 45 (45%) patients were having a B+ blood group; 33% patients were having O+ blood group, followed by A+ (10%), AB+ (8%), A− (2%), B− (1%) and AB− (1%). Around 43.64% study subjects with O + blood groups showed complete cytogenetic response, followed by B+ (41.82%), A+ (10.91), A− (1.82) and AB+ (1.82). An equal number of patients (40% each) with O+ and B+ blood groups, followed by A+ (20%) showed undetectable Abelson-breakpoint cluster region (BCR-ABL)/ratio (%). About 75% of patients showed complete haematological response (CHR) and 25% showed PHR. Patients with B+ and O+ blood groups (41.33%) showed a CHR. It was observed that a maximum number of patients were suffering from symptoms of an abdominal mass (37%), 43.24% of patients with B+ blood group showed an abdominal mass, followed by O+ (35.13%), A+ and AB+ (8.11% each), B − and AB− (2.70% each). Conclusion: This study revealed that study subjects with B+ and O+ blood groups showed better cytogenetic, molecular and haematological responses as compared with patients with other blood groups at 6 and 12 months of treatment with Imatinib.
