Hemangiopericytoma of the urinary bladder: A case report and review of the literature

Abstract: A case of hemangiopericytoma arising in the urinary bladder is presented. Initial symptoms included hematuria and frequency of urination. Hemangiopericytoma is a vascular tumor of pericyte origin which occurs primarily in several organs and can be benign or malignant. Reports in the literature of genitourinary system involvement are reviewed. It is concluded that genitourinary tumors of this type should be considered malignant and treated aggressively.

“…To the best of our knowledge, only eight cases of HPC of the bladder have been previously reported in the English literature (Table I) (29). In these cases and including the current study, the mean age of the patients at the time of diagnosis is 48.5 years (range, 29–72 years), with a predominance of females (six vs. two).…”

“…HPC mostly arises in the lower extremities, retroperitoneum and head and neck area (24). To the best of our knowledge, only eight cases of HPC of the bladder have been previously reported in the English literature (29). The rarity of HPC of the bladder makes it difficult to predict the clinical behaviour and determine the appropriate treatment of this tumour.…”

“…Moreover, it is classified as a soft-tissue vascular tumor originating from pericytes, which occurs commonly in the extremities, pelvis, head and neck, and meninges (2,3). On the other hand, HPC is rarely encountered in urogenital system (4)(5)(6). Renal HPC is also extremely rare tumor and only 41 case reports have been previously documented (7).…”
