Helminth parasite spectrum of fishes in Meghalaya, Northeast India: a checklist

Abstract: Fish constitute a major component of diet for the people of Northeast India and they are extensively used as a protein-rich food for human consumption. The present studies incorporate the spectrum, composition and diversity of the parasitic species in freshwater fishes in Meghalaya, Northeast India, with a view to identifying the species recovered by morphological criteria based on light microscopy. The collection sites included sixteen foci from eleven districts of Meghalaya for parasites occurring in the com… Show more

“…Known parasitic helminths of fish are different species of nematodes (roundworms), flukes and cestodes (tapeworms) (e.g. see Bristow (1993), Jyrwa et al (2016), Eiras (2016), Rauque et al (2018)). These are larger internal parasites, of which several can be observed with the naked eye in infected fish (Jansson & Vennerstr€ om, 2014).…”

“…Fish were euthanised by severing the spinal cord with a single cut posterior to the skull, dissected and the intestine examined for digenean trematodes. Freshly recovered parasites were washed in saline solution and preserved either with 70% ethanol for light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) study (Dos Santos et al, 2015;Jyrwa et al, 2016), 10% neutral buffered formalin for histological study, or 96% ethanol for genetic analyses (Blasco-Costa et al, 2016). Additionally, some of the parasites were slightly flattened in a drop of alcoholformalin-acetic acid (AFA) between a glass slide and coverslip, and subsequently transferred to 70% ethanol (Jyrwa et al, 2016).…”
