Helix-Sense Controlled Polymerization of a Single Phenyl Isocyanide Enantiomer Leading to Diastereomeric Helical Polyisocyanides with Opposite Helix-Sense and Cholesteric Liquid Crystals with Opposite Twist-Sense

Abstract: We report the unprecedented helix-sense controlled polymerization of enantiomerically pure phenyl isocyanides bearing an l- or d-alanine pendant with a long alkyl chain. The polymerization with an achiral nickel catalyst diastereoselectively proceeds, resulting in either a right- or left-handed helical polymer, whose helix-sense can be controlled by the polymerization solvent and temperature. Both the diastereomeric right- and left-handed helical polymers further self-assemble into lyotropic cholesteric liquid… Show more

“…Figure 5 shows the typical AFM phase images of poly(1L m -co-1D n ) deposited on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) from a dilute benzene solution (0.005 mg ml À1 ), followed by benzene vapor exposure at B25 1C for 12 h. 21,22 This method is also very useful for constructing highly ordered 2D helix bundles with a controlled helicity for a dynamically racemic helical poly(phenylacetylene) 23 and helical polyisocyanides [46][47][48] on HOPG, and their helical structures were visualized by AFM. 49 Poly(1L m -co-1D n ) self-assembled into regular 2D helix bundles with a constant height (B1.6 nm), and the copolymer chains packed parallel to each other.…”

“…The high-resolution AFM enabled the determination of helical structures, including their helical senses. 88 L-20a polymerized in CCl 4 exhibited a positive first Cotton effect sign (De 1st ¼+8.1) and self-assembled on HOPG to form slightly irregular 2D helix bundles consisting of major right-handed helical segments with a helical pitch of 1.25 nm, together with minor, but apparently left-handed, helical blocks (Figure 10a, right). These results suggest that L-20a has a predominantly right-handed helical structure, but the helical structure is imperfect.…”

“…Static diastereomeric leftand right-handed helical poly(isocyanides) have been prepared through control of the polymerization solvent and temperature. 28 The resultant polymers with opposite helix sense further formed a lyotropic cholesteric LC with opposite twist senses. In their subsequent work, the authors separated single-handed helices from racemic helices through facile treatment with acetone.…”
