Helicobacter pylori Prevalence in Diabetes Mellitus Patients with Dyspeptic Symptoms and its Relationship to Glycemic Control and Late Complications

Abstract: The prevalence of H. pylori infection did not differ significantly between the diabetic patients and nondiabetic controls. Interestingly, diabetics with H. pylori infection had a higher incidence of neuropathy, although there was no association between the duration and regulation of diabetes, retinopathy, nephropathy and H. pylori status.

“…This is in agreement with previous studies reported by Candelli et al [10], Anastasios et al [7], Demir et al [8] Xia et al [9], and Ko et al [11]. However, other studies reported a higher prevalence of H. pylori infection in type 2 diabetic patients in comparison to non diabetic subjects [12][13][14][15].…”

“…Community based surveys gave conflicting results about the prevalence of gastro-intestinal (GI) tract symptoms in persons with or without DM [5,6]. Some studies reported no difference in H. pylori infection rates between diabetic patients and controls [7][8][9][10][11], while other studies reported a higher rate of H. pylori infection in diabetic patients [12][13][14][15].…”

“…Zelenkova had reported a prevalence of H. pylori to be lower in diabetics compared to non-diabetic controls (27% vs. 51%) [27,28]. In other studies, the prevalence of H. pylori infection was comparable between diabetic and control [10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17]. In our study we found no significant association between H. pylori and diabetes (p=0.979).…”

“…Since, in the current literature, there is no comprehensive review representing an evidence-based knowledge on the prevalence of H. Pylori infection and its potential associations with dyspeptic symptoms in the Middle Eastern countries [12][13][14][15][16] and in Lebanon [17][18][19]; and on the association of H. pylori and diabetes mellitus [19] we conducted this study aiming to determine the prevalence of H. pylori infection by using gastric biopsy detection in symptomatic patients, to examine potential risk factors that may influence the acquisition of H. pylori infection, and its possible association with diabetes.…”

“…Some studies have shown a higher prevalence of H.pylori infection in people with type 1 (de Luis et al, 1998; El-Eshmawy et al, 2011) and type 2 diabetes (Bener et al, 2007;Devrajani et al, 2010). This relationship seems to be correlated with gender (Hamed et al, 2008), BMI (Bener et al, 2007;Perdichizzi et al, 1996), the duration of diabetes (de Luis et al, 1998), the presence of dyspepsia, cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy (Gulcelik et al, 2005) and glycated hemoglobin (Chen and Blaser, 2012;Hsieh et al, 2013), whilst other studies have indicated neutral or even negative results (Anastasios et al, 2002;Demir et al, 2008;Gillum, 2004). These contradictory findings might well be due to the different study populations.…”
