Helicobacter delphinicola sp. nov., isolated from common bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus with gastric diseases

Abstract: Gastritis and gastric ulcers are well-recognized symptoms in cetaceans, and the genus Helicobacter is considered as the main cause. In this study, we examined the gastric fluid of captive common bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus with gastric diseases in order to isolate the organisms responsible for diagnosis and treatment. Four Gram-negative, rod-shaped isolates (TSBT, TSH1, TSZ, and TSH3) with tightly coiled spirals with 2-4 turns and 2-6 bipolar, sheathed flagella, were obtained from gastric fluids of … Show more

“…Nalidixic acid and cephalothin resistance were detected for isolates. The phenotypic characteristics that differentiated 11 isolates from other Helicobacter species are given in Table 3, [3,4,20,21,[58][59][60]. The table contains standard strains close to H. turcicus sp.…”

“…Despite increasing interest in the comprehensive intestinal microbiota of cetaceans, few studies have investigated the characteristics of each bacterial species in the cetacean intestine. Therefore, our knowledge of the function of cetacean intestinal bacteria is limited to lactic acid bacteria [18,19] and some potential pathogens [11,[20][21][22].…”
