Background: Identification of victims is one of the main challenges of forensic medicine. Height is one of the key measurements of the biological profiles of individuals. This study aimed to evaluate height based on measuring three-dimensional CT scan indices of twelfth thoracic (T12), first lumbar (L1), and fifth lumbar (L5) vertebrae in Iranian adults. Methods: The present study was a cross-sectional study performed on 100 patients who underwent a spinal CT scan. Vertebral T12, L1, and L5 indices were measured in these individuals. Finally, the evaluated indices were statistically compared and the diagnostic effect of each was evaluated to estimate the height. Independent t-test and linear regression were used using SPSS software v. 21. A P value less than 0.05 was considered significant. Results: The results showed that the mean difference between T12, L1, and L5 indices in the two groups of male and female patients was statistically significant. With one unit increase in the Transverse process distance T 12 (TDM T12), there is an increase of 0.42 units in height (P=0.02). Conclusion: According to the results of the present study, the measurements of the T12, L1, and L5 vertebral indices have a significant relationship with gender. Among the measurements of the T12, L1, and L5 vertebral indices, just TDM T12 can be a predictive factor to estimate the height of the Iranian population.

Background: The growth prediction using reliable growth assessment methods is an invaluable tool during orthodontic treatment planning. This study aimed to examine the relationship between frontal sinus (FS) morphology and cervical vertebral maturation (CVM) to predict the skeletal maturity of an individual. Methods: The present study consisted of 252 lateral cephalograms of orthodontic patients. CVM stages and FS parameters such as FS height, FS width, and FS index were assessed using the same lateral cephalogram. Statistical methods including t test, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and Pearson correlation (r) were used for the statistical analysis. Results: FS height and width were greater in males (24.33±4.21; 10.08±3.20) compared to females (21.43±5.34; 8.12±2.19), indicating a statistical difference (P<0.05). However, FS index did not show a statistically significant difference (P=0.32) between males (2.59±0.74) and females (2.69±0.44) (P=0.32). FS height and width increased significantly in a linear fashion from CVM stage 1 to stage 6. FS index, on the other hand, did not exhibit any statistically significant differences among CVM stages in both males and females. FS height and width showed a significant weak to moderate correlation with CVM stages in both males and females. However, FS index exhibited a mild and weak negative correlation with the CVM stages in both males and females. Conclusions: FS height and width had a significant weak to moderate correlation with CVM stages in both the males and females, while FS index had a weak negative correlation with CVM stages in both males and females. Unlike the CVM method, the FS morphology cannot be reliably utilized to assess the skeletal maturity.

A antropologia forense lida com perícias criminais de ossadas, cadáveres carbonizados e corpos em avançado estado putrefativo, sendo crucial nesta análise a definição do perfil biológico (PB) com as estimativas do sexo, idade, estatura e ancestralidade. Os elementos de maior precisão técnica nestas estimativas são o exame conjunto dos ossos do quadril, crânio e membros, que nem sempre estão disponíveis, o que torna importante o estudo de partes isoladas na estimativa do PB. A segunda vértebra cervical (C2) é uma opção, pois resiste à decomposição e geralmente está presente na maioria das perícias antropológicas. Foi realizado um estudo transversal com medidas de 71 C2 secas periciadas no Instituto Médico Legal André Roquette buscando correlacionar 15 medidas vertebrais, a massa e 4 parâmetros qualitativos com a estimativa do PB. A massa vertebral e a maioria das medidas realizadas foram significativamente maiores nos homens. Com base em algumas medidas foi criada uma equação para a estimativa do sexo biológico e três para a estimativa da estatura. Não houve associação entre os parâmetros avaliados com a idade e com a ancestralidade, mas osteófitos foram observados predominantemente em periciados com idade igual ou superior a 40 anos. Os resultados apresentados indicam potencial aplicação prática em nosso meio. Entretanto, há necessidade de estudos posteriores para validação das equações apresentadas
