“…Here, rather than moving from chemistry to perception, we went from perception to chemistry and probed a large set of physicochemical descriptors using an unbiased statistical approach. In this, we have followed in the footsteps of Schiffman (1974Schiffman ( , 1977, Amoore (1963), Dravnieks (1982Dravnieks ( , 1984Dravnieks ( , 1985, and others, that together laid the groundwork for this approach between the early 1950s to late 1970s (Amoore, 1963;Laffort and Dravnieks, 1973;Schiffman, 1974). In this respect, the contribution of the current work is in observing that the perception of pleasantness corresponded to a physicochemical axis that was the best single discriminator of molecules that have a smell.…”

“…As an second test of whether perceptual PC1 reflects odor pleasantness, we compared previously published pleasantness ratings for each of the 146 perceptual descriptors used (Dravnieks et al, 1984) (note, these are pleasantness ratings associated with the descriptors, not the odorants) to the component weights on the first PC. Figure 2c shows the component weights, sorted by value for the first PC.…”

“…pleasant vs. unpleasant character) often shows up when a wide range of odors is assessed (for review, see Zarzo, 2011). In order to study if pleasantness (valence) is a salient dimension of the olfactory databases studied here, I checked the correlation of loadings with hedonic tones (HT) of descriptors obtained by Dravnieks et al (1984), which will be called HT D84 . These authors asked a panel of about 120 individuals to rate the HT of 146 odor descriptors on a numeric scale ranging from -4 for the most unpleasant to +4 for the most pleasant.…”

“…Mecamylamine (0.225 mg, volume: 0.3 ml) or saline (volume: 0.3 ml) was applied locally to the nasal cavity by means of a nasal spray. Following each stimulation with the test substances, we registered olfactory ('odorous' sensation) and trigeminal intensity estimates ('burning' sensation) via computer monitor and assessed verbal descriptors by means of Dravnieks's (odor quality Dravnieks et al, 1984) and McGill's (pain quality Stein and Mendl, 1988) questionnaires. At the end of experiment-1, we determined detection and trigeminal thresholds in a second threshold testing session in order to assess the effect of mecamylamine vs placebo.…”
