Hedging weather risk and coordinating supply chains

Abstract: The sales of many products can be influenced by weather conditions, positively or negatively. For the manufacturers in question, one of their entrepreneurial risks is to incur lower than expected sales because of adverse weather conditions. The variability of weather conditions is expected to continue to rise because of climate change. Manufacturers can choose to do nothing and suffer the financial consequences, or transfer the weather risk partly or wholly to others. This paper presents an approach to transfe… Show more

“…In contrast to the above examples, Brusset and Bertrand (2018) demonstrated a traditional DS approach in their development of weather‐based financial instruments to improve supply chain coordination. Along the lines described in the 2016 essay by Van Aken et al, these authors extended a tool used in finance for the supply chain context to solve a problem in one chain.…”

“…Although the first three papers (Groop et al, 2007; Akkermans et al, 2019; Kunz & Van Wassenhove, 2019) were accepted by the DS department editors, they diverged from the traditional DS view of creating and testing an artifact as exemplified by Brusset and Bertrand (2018). Rather, all three papers described research that began from a failed attempt to apply theory to a problem, resulting in a new understanding of the problem or an expansion of the set of theories used to solve the problem.…”

“…Note that the emphasis here is on knowledge transfer and process transformation rather than the efficiencies achieved through the application of the scientific methods. Examples of similar papers in OM with practical applications and structure can be found in Brusset and Bertrand (2018) and Kinra et al (2020).…”

In Brusset and Bertrand (2018), the errors were published on pages 41, 43, 46, and in References. On page 41, where the article reads:The fact that temperature, rainfall and other weather variables have direct effects on various economic series is not new (Steele, 1951; Granger, 1978).
