Hectorite and bentonite effect on water-based polymer coating rheology

Abstract: Increased interest in aesthetic, natural nail coatings has encouraged more in-depth studies, and particularly of ultraviolet curable coatings, their formation, processing, characteristics, and removal. This study investigated the impact of various thixotropic agents (organically modified hectorite and bentonite clays) on water-based oligomer system rheology. Ingredients were evaluated to determine their influence on unreacted composite characteristics (viscosity and pigment suspension stability) and reacted fi… Show more

“…Fine mineral particles, in particular silicates, are mostly used to influence polymer thixotropic properties such as in paints and coatings. 6 Since the first success of polymer-clay nanocomposites in 1993, the ultimate goal in the preparation of such composites is to achieve a homogeneous dispersion of single separate clay mineral layers in a polymer matrix, called "exfoliation". Several strategies have been developed focusing on the processing methods to obtain composite materials through in situ exfoliation, solution exfoliation, or melt exfoliation.…”

“…The industrial application of OC has been recognized in the literature due to the excellent performance that engendered on the physical properties of the elaborated composites [3,11,13,20]. Several obstacles are encountered which limit the application of natural fiber in cement composites [15].…”

“…Inherent to this technology is the use of the photoactivator system that is capable of absorbing the UV radiation to convert monomers/oligomers into crosslinked networks [1]. Main components of the system are: a photoinitiator to initiate the polymerization process; oligomer which determines the main characteristics of coating; monomer which controls the viscosity of not yet polymerized systems; additives (such as pigments) which give the coating an esthetical view; microbeads which meet the specific needs of the coating [2][3][4][5][6].…”

“…Thin film coatings on fingernails and toenails are used for aesthetic reasons [2], as drug delivery systems [7][8][9] or to strengthen fragile nails [2,3]. Coating adhesion and disintegration is one of the most important characteristics of short-term coatings [3,4].…”
