Heavy metals pollution index of surface water from Commodore channel, Lagos, Nigeria

Abstract: Surface water pollution poses a major risk to all biotic entities dependent on the water body. This study assessed the surface water quality of commodore channel, Lagos lagoon with respect to its heavy metals pollution level using indexing approach to determine the sources of heavy metal and its associated pollution risk. Samples were collected at a depth of 10-15 cm within a distance of 4 km from the shore line. Metal concentrations were evaluated using Atomic Absorption Spectrometry. The Concentrations of Pb… Show more

“…ranging from 66 to 90 and 2.0 to 26 [14,15] although the rivers are located nearby mining areas. In Nigeria (Commodore channel) and China (Houjing River), the HPI results ranged between 985 and 5995, and 100 and 230, indicating high amounts of heavy metals due to industrial (wastewaters, landfill leachate) and household activities [60,61].…”

“…The kidney is the main target organ for cadmium toxicity (World Health Organization, 2017). After acute ingesting cadmium, symptoms such as abdominal pain, burning sensation, nausea, vomiting, salivation, muscle cramps, vertigo, shock, loss of consciousness, and convulsions usually appear within 15 to 30 min and may cause osteomalacia, anemia, and teeth discoloration (Charles et al, 2018;Tchounwou et al, 2012).…”

“…Zn may cause vomiting, nausea, and stomach cramps. They are also associated with hematotoxicity, pancreatic and adrenal abnormalities, and impaired immune function (Charles et al, 2018;Lin et al, 2017). Recent studies have delineated the threshold for the effects of copper in drinking water on the gastrointestinal tract.…”
