Heavy metals in soil and vegetables grown with municipal wastewater in Lahore

Abstract: Heavy metals contamination of fruits and vegetables as a consequence of wastewater irrigation is most important concern today. Present study measures heavy metals concentration (Cr, Cu and Pb) in soil and vegetable samples collected from agriculture area around four major drains of Lahore (Hudiara drain, BabuSabu drain, Chota Ravi drain and Kharak drain). Results show that concentration of Cu, Cr and Pb in soil samples were in compliance with WHO and EU standards, with an average of 2.221 + 1.184, 5.314 + 1.05… Show more

“…Pb concentration in this study in vegetables and fruits samples exhibited higher levels than other detected by (Mansour et al, 2009) According to Hamid et al, 2017; the aerial parts of vegetables /fruits are taken heavy metals from the soil results to the continuous use and extravagance of pesticides, fungicides, fertilizer and agrochemicals by farmers for high production of vegetables may increase the concentration of heavy metals.…”

“…n = Total number of samples.n 1 = Number of samples where heavy metals were non-detectable.Maximum permissible limit of Pb = 0.3 mg/kg (Mohod, 2015); Cd = 0.1 mg/kg (Mohod, 2015); Cr = 2.4 mg/kg (Hamid et al., 2017). …”

“…Heavy metals like Pb, Cd, Cr etc. are recognized as metals of immediate concern (Hamid et al., 2017; WHO, 2004) if small extent of these metal entered into human bodies through food, drinking water and/or air (Sobukola et al., 2010). As the external morphology of vegetables cannot guarantee safety from microbial or chemical contamination, thus, heavy metals contamination ranked highest among the major contaminants of leafy vegetables.…”

“…Metal analysis: The analysis of Heavy metals concentration present in the selected soil sample showed that heavy metals specifically Cu, Zn and Pb are present in high concentration in compliance with WHO (2006) standards and these heavy metals have also been recognized as metals of immediate concern by WHO (2010) and (Hamid et al ., 2017). Isolation and identification of metal tolerant bacterial strains: The range of metal tolerance in selected strains against Cu, Zn and Pb was reported previously.…”
