“…The Coatzacoalcos estuary has an estimated length of 40 km. In the upper estuary, width and depth reach 213 and 18 m respectively; in the river mouth, width and depth reach 530 and 11 m respectively (Rosales-Hoz et al 2003a). In the course of the main water body, several rivers discharge their waters, contributing to the load of contaminants to the estuary: Coachapa river, Uxpanapa river, San Francisco stream, Calzada river, and Teapa stream.…”

“…Depending on the season and on the basis of meteorological conditions, the Coatzacoalcos estuary may reach up to 40 km upstream; nevertheless, the lower Coatzacoalcos river has been highly industrialized since the 1970s and currently accounts for 65 petrochemical plants that produce more than 15 million tons of petrochemical products (Rosales-Hoz et al 2003a). Mercury transportation in the environment is mainly influenced by atmospheric dynamics; therefore, in this paper the seasonal variability of mercury in surficial sediments, clams and a variety of fish of dietary importance from the industrialized part of the Coatzacoalcos estuary is examined, in order to elucidate if Hg concentrations are season dependent for the study area.…”

“…Sediments were dated using the 137 Cs methods described by Rosales-Hoza et al (2003). Accuracy of heavy metals analysis method Four parallel analyses of standard sediment reference material (GSD-9 from Institute of Geophysical and Geochemical Exploration, Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences) were conducted to verify the accuracy of the heavy metal digestion method.…”

“…Sediments are an important sink and source for heavy metals and play an important role in the remobilization of metals to the aquatic environment (Sprovieri et al, 2007). The transfer of metals from sediments to organisms has been reported as an important metal source for many species (Rosales-Hoz et al, 2003). Sediment quality guidelines developed by Long et al (1995) are used to assess sediment ecological toxicity to aquatic organisms.…”
