Deposition of Potentially Toxic Metals in the Soil from Surrounding Cement Plants in a Karst Area of Southeastern Brazil

Cement factories are the main sources of environmental pollutants among the different industrial activities, including soil contamination by potentially toxic metals. The karst region of Southeastern Brazil is known for the implementation of large cement producing facilities. This study aims to evaluate whether there is an increase in the concentration of PTM in the soil surrounding the cement plants and to estimate their harmfulness to both local human population and environment. In total, 18 soil samples were collected from the surroundings of three cement plants as well as four soil samples from areas outside the influence of cement plants and concentration of the following potentially toxic metals (PTM) were estimated: Cd, Pb, Co, Cu, Cr, Mn, Ni, and Zn. The results revealed that all PTM concentrations from cement plant surroundings were significantly higher than PTM concentrations from control areas and no PTM concentrations from CPS or CA soil samples exceeded national and global contamination thresholds. However, Igeo Index indicated low level soil contamination by Pb, Cu, and Cr, as well as high levels for Co. We could not verify significant non-carcinogenic risk to health for any soil sample, but carcinogenic risk analysis revealed different levels of carcinogenic risk among the sampled locations, for both adults and children. Our results indicate that exclusively evaluating the concentration of potentially toxic metals is not enough to verify the potential harmful effects of cement production for the surrounding population. Here we evidence that additional indices, based on both contamination indices and health risk assessments, should be considered for better evaluation of the impacts of cement production activity.

Resumo: Concentrações de cromo total entre 0,45 e 110µg/L têm sido detectadas, no Sistema Aquífero Bauru (SAB) no Estado de São Paulo, Brasil, excedendo, algumas vezes, o padrão de qualidade adotado pela legislação brasileira, que é de 50μg/L. Segundo a Companhia Ambiental do Estado de São Paulo (CETESB), parte do cromo é composta pela forma hexavalente [Cr(VI)], que apresenta controversas evidências quanto à carcinogenicidade por via oral. Este artigo tem como objetivo avaliar o efeito da exposição ao Cr(VI) em baixas doses na mortalidade por câncer gástrico da população entre 15 e 75 anos ou mais, que consumiu água do SAB, no período entre 2004 e 2015. Foi realizado um estudo ecológico em 326 municípios situados no Planalto Ocidental Paulista e que usam água do SAB. As associações foram estimadas pelo modelo de regressão linear, utilizando-se indicadores de exposição ao cromo (proxy) e razão de mortalidade padronizada (RMP) para as neoplasias gástricas como variável resposta. O Índice de Desenvolvimento Humano Municipal (IDHM) foi empregado para controlar possíveis diferenças socioeconômicas da população investigada. A RMP estimada para o câncer gástrico correspondeu a 79% dos óbitos esperados, sendo que o risco foi menor nos municípios que têm água tratada pela Companhia de Saneamento Básico do Estado de São Paulo (SABESP), com especial atenção para a população feminina (β = -0,146; IC95%: -0,270; -0,021; p = 0,022). Embora os dados da pesquisa sejam limitados, em 77 (23,6%) dos municípios avaliados, houve aumento do risco de câncer gástrico. Dentre esses, quase 70% se abastecem de manancial subterrâneo, associado às bacias hidrográficas com anomalias geoquímicas de Cr(VI).

Louhajang River, Bangladesh, crosses Tangail, which is a densely industrialized and urbanized city. Louhajang River is an essential water source for domestic, irrigation, and urbanization purposes. This study reports the levels of pH, electrical conductivity (EC), and some toxic heavy metals in 40 water samples collected during summer and winter seasons from Louhajang River. The levels were found to be in the ranges of pH 6.22-7.43 and EC 345-798 mS/cm, Cr 0.18-13.2, Ni 0.02-19.04, Cu 0.96-15.92, As 2.18-12.51, Cd 0.02-2.42, and Pb 0.49-15.74 µg/L. The winter season reported higher levels of the examined parameters than the summer season with significant variation (p < 0.05) for all parameters, with the exception of Cd. The metal contents were assessed against local and international standards for drinking, irrigation and aquatic life purposes where different trends were observed. The heavy metal evaluation index (HEI) and the ecological risk index (ERI) reported low to moderate risks. The spatial distribution of metal contents assigned hot spots in some sites along the riverbed, which were attributed to specific manmade sources. The health risk assessment for three population categories, i.e., adult male, adult female, and children, were examined in terms of hazard index (HI) and total cancer risk (TCR) for oral and dermal pathways during both seasons. Cr and Cd recorded HI more than unit in all cases, indicating possible non-cancer risk. TCR values of As for the three examined population categories during both seasons were > 1.0×10-6, indicating possible cancer risk, while that of Pb were < 1.0×10-6. For Ni, about 10-25% of the sampled sites recorded TCR > 1.0×10-6.
