Heavy metals analysis and quality assessment in drinking water – Khorramabad city, Iran

Abstract: Continuous monitoring of drinking water quality is essential in terms of heavy metals and toxic substances. The general objective of this study were to determine the concentration of heavy metals in drinking water of Khorramabad city and to determine the water quality indices (The heavy metal pollution index and heavy metal evaluation index). According to the city map, 45 points were selected for drinking water sampling through the city distribution system. The results of this study showed that the average con… Show more

“…Radioactivity, major and heavy element rates should not exceed the permissible limits for drinking water. For this reason, the metals and natural radioactivity concentration in water have been studied by many investigators in several countries (Ali et al, 2016;Radulescu et al, 2017;Ghaderpoori et al, 2018;Parhoudeh et al, 2019). In Saudi Arabia, there are limited studies on drinking water (Al-Ghamdi, 2014;Al-Zahrani, 2016;Althoyaib & El-Taher, 2016;Alseroury et al, 2018).…”

“…On the other hand, human development has encouraged heavy metal contamination in water sources in a number of ways, these include (i) fertilizer application in irrigation water that interacts with aquifers or becomes transported downstream where domestic applications are realized, (ii) rainwater harvesting through various roof materials, and (iii) corrosion of metallic-based water supply networks [72]. The Ministry of Water [67] demonstrated the significance of assessing heavy metals due to their increasing impacts on public health [73][74][75]. Similar to other chemical pollutants, heavy metals are bioaccumulated in body tissues and will present their effect at chronic levels [76].…”

“…Heavy metal denotes any type of metal plus metalloid component with relatively great density varying from three point five (3.5) to seven (7) gcm -3 , they are noxious as well Table 1. Though heavy metals is a universal term that is extensively documented besides often applied to the extensive soils and water bodies contaminants (Fish et al, 2017;Ghaderpoori et al, 2018). They are found broadly in the earth's layer and are non-decomposable in nature, they might enter into the environment or nearby water bodies by household applications, mining events and industrial discharge.…”

“…Sulphide that was transformed into sulphate creating a black slime that can clog plumbing as well stain clothing, water blackening or black slime coating within toilet tanks which might be revealing a sulfur-oxidizing bacteria problem. Sulphate can initiate heavy metal discharge from iron decomposition scales since there are strong correlations incidence amongst the heavy metals releases or toxic metals which are the metal compounds that are toxic besides have negative influence on publics' health but very slight quantities of these metals are mandatory to support life (Ghaderpoori et al, 2018;Hug et al, 2017). In recent years, several serious red water cases have occurred due to source water swap, for instance in Southern California, Tucson, Arizona and Tampa, Florida in the United States (Liu et al, 2017).…”
