Heavy metal contamination of prenatal vitamins

Abstract: HighlightsToxic elements are found in prenatal vitamins with lead at unacceptable levels in more than half of the products tested.Arsenic is also found in some products at unsafe levels.Thallium is present at levels in some products that are not acceptable. Some products have very low level, which are safer, and recommendations are made to have industry (self regulatory) and government oversight to have the least contamination of prenatal vitamins.

“…It can be assumed that this urban coastal population had a higher standard of living, consumed an urban diet including ready-made meals, had an increased consumption of citrate-containing cool drinks, and frequently used cosmetics, various Al-containing hygiene products and Al-containing antacids and medications. Recently, it has been shown that prenatal vitamins and other supplements (both prescribed and self-medicated) sold in Canada and other countries contain various neurotoxic elements including Al, Pb, As, titanium, and thoreum [45]. The consumption of these products may pose a danger to the developing foetus, which has an immature detoxification mechanism when compared with its mother [45].…”

The consumption of these products may pose a danger to the developing foetus, which has an immature detoxification mechanism when compared with its mother [45]. Thus, the mean concentration of Al in serum is higher in the urban coastal population, although the ranges are very similar in both populations, viz.…”

“…Cosmetics use in pregnancy is not uncommon. Schwalfenberg et al, 2018 reported that prenatal lead exposure is associated with a greater risk of premature delivery, reduced postnatal growth, lower mental growth in childhood, schizophrenia and dementia in adulthood [39]. Even low level of Cd exposure may avert neurodevelopment [40].…”
