Heavy metal accumulation and tolerance of energy grass (Elymus elongatus subsp. ponticus cv. Szarvasi-1) grown in hydroponic culture

Abstract: Phytoremediation is a plant based, cost effective technology to detoxify or stabilize contaminated soils. Fast growing, high biomass, perennial plants may be used not only in phytoremediation but also in energy production. Szarvasi-1 energy grass (Elymus elongatus subsp. ponticus cv. Szarvasi-1), a good candidate for this combined application, was grown in nutrient solution in order to assess its Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn accumulation and tolerance. Its shoot metal accumulation showed the order Pb Show more

“…This reduction under stress condition may be attributed to the reduced stomatal pore size that induces lower photosynthetic rate (Elloumi et al, 2014;Zouari et al, 2016). Sipos et al (2013) showed that the lower Chl concentration may have resulted in lower photosynthetic performance that required a lower gas exchange rate leading to stomatal closure. Hence, strong decrease in leaf conductance of plants grown in SS-treated soil was detected.…”

“…These grasses include Chrysopogon zizanioides , Arundo donax , Pennisetum americanum, Miscanthus sinensis , Elymus elongatus subsp. and Panicum virgatum ( Reed et al, 1999 ; Sabeen et al, 2013 ; Sipos et al, 2013 ; Ondo et al, 2014 ; Zhang et al, 2014 ; Firmin et al, 2015 ). Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum ), a perennial warm season rhizomatous grass, originated in North America and can be used to produce biofuels, bioethanol and methane ( Schmer et al, 2008 ; Koçar & Civaş, 2013 ; Wu et al, 2015 ; Kou et al, 2017 ).…”

“…Moreover, Cd 2+ ions may also cause a decrease in the uptake of other micro-and macro-elements important for plant development, such as Zn, Mn or Ca (Jiang et al, 2004;Suzuki et al, 2005;Wang et al, 2007). Unlike Fe, the reduction in the uptake of micro-and macronutrients takes place by competition with Cd 2+ ions in transporter systems for absorption by the roots (Nedjimi & Daoud, 2009;Astolfi et al, 2012;Sipos et al, 2013), which may also be important under in vitro conditions. Thus, the stimulation of S. viminalis growth with different Streptomyces sp.…”
