Three artificial graphites have beer1 stuclied by X-ray, electron microscope, and adsorption techrliques. Surface areas were calc~~lated from the adsorption isotherms and from the X-ray spectra. The two sets of areas were of the same orcler of magnitude and varied from 18 ~n .~/ g . for the graphite of smallest surface area to 385 ~n .~/ g . for the graphite of largest surface area. The appearance of the graphites under the electron lllicroscope \\-as in qualitative agreement with the adsorptioll and X-ray data.
