Heating rate effects on thermal analysis measurement ofTgin composite materials

Abstract: Three measurement techniques used to measure the glass transition temperature (T g) have been subjected to a critical comparison; dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), thermomechanical analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry. A new procedure, whereby different specimens are tested over a range of heating rates, has been used in order to eliminate the effects of thermal lag and determine a T g independent of heating rate (T g(0)). It has been shown that for measurements of T g(0) for composites, the DMA th… Show more

“…Two characteristic changes in the storage modulus could be distinguished. The first change, between 50 and 70 °C, was the drop of storage modulus, which was related to glass transition temperature (T g ) at around 60 °C, as reported by Yong et al [ 47 ]. The second change, between 80 and 100 °C, was recognized as the beginning of cold crystallization process.…”

“…The Tg obtained from the DMA is more accurate compared to that of the DSC according to previous literature. 35 The Tg from the tan δ curve of the DMA studies showed broader peaks compared to that of the DSC result. However, similar trend was obtained from the graphs of DMA and DSC.…”

“…A nitrogen atmosphere was available in the heating chamber. The Tg estimation was performed as Yong et al [ 37 ] proposed. Accordingly, analysis of the curve (temperature dependence of dimensional change) was obtained by a sensitive probe while having plotted the first derivation of that dependency.…”
