Heated dorsal hand vein sampling for metabolic studies: a reappraisal

Abstract: The purpose of the current study was to determine the accuracy of a given heated dorsal hand vein (HDHV) measurement in predicting a simultaneous arterial measurement and to validate this technique for use in stable isotope studies. Twenty catheterizations of the femoral artery, femoral vein, and a dorsal hand vein were performed in 13 healthy male subjects. Simultaneous blood samples were obtained from all three sites during primed continuous infusions of L-[1-13C]leucine (Leu) and L-[ring-2H5]phenylalanine (… Show more

“…Growth hormone (5 ng/kg of FFM per min) was replaced, but glucagons were not replaced because muscle has no glucagon receptors. Arterialized blood was collected using the heated hand vein method (24). Plasma glucose was measured every 10 -15 min with a glucose analyzer (Beckman, Fullerton, CA).…”

“…In the morning, the hand with the retrograde catheter was kept in a "hot box" at 60°C to obtain arterialized venous blood (16). On the insulin-treated day, an intravenous insulin infusion using regular human insulin was started and the plasma glucose maintained between 4.44 and 5.56 mmol/l overnight until 1200 h the next day.…”

“…A polyethylene cannula was inserted into an antecubital vein for the infusion of all test substances. A second catheter was inserted retrogradely into the contralateral antecubital vein for blood sampling, and the forearm was kept heated (55). Blood glucose was measured every 5 -10 min by the glucose oxidase method at the patient's bedside (YSI 2300 stat plus glucose analyser, YSI Incorporated, Yellow Springs, OH, USA).…”
