Heat Waves in China: Definitions, Leading Patterns, and Connections to Large‐Scale Atmospheric Circulation and SSTs

Abstract: Based on the daily maximum temperatures (Tmax) from 587 surface observation stations in China during 1959–2013, heat waves are detected using both absolute and relative definitions. The spatiotemporal variations of heat wave occurrence/duration/amplitude are compared between the two definitions. Considering the significant differences in regional climatology, relative threshold is more meaningful to detect the local extremes. By utilizing the empirical orthogonal function, the integral index heat wave total in… Show more

“…Higher average magnitudes of compound dry and hot events (higher values of DHMI) mainly occurred in northeastern and southwestern China (figure 4(a)). These results are partly consistent with previous studies for severe droughts as well as heat waves occurring in these regions (Yu et al 2014, Wang et al 2017. For the eastern part of Inner Mongolia (northeastern China), Sichuan province and Chongqing Municipality (southwestern China), the high magnitude of the compound dry and hot event is generally in agreement with the high chance of concurrent dry and hot events in previous studies Liu 2018, Wu et al 2019).…”

“…Northwestern China plays an important part in the Belt and Road initiative, with Xinjiang Province and Gansu Province forming the vital northwestern doorway. However, the region of China is experiencing increasing numbers of heatwaves (Ren et al ., ; Xu et al ., ; Wang et al ., ; Perkins, ; Chen and Zhai, ; Wang et al ., ). Recent studies have documented that the number of hot extremes over northwestern China has shown a significant positive trend in recent decades (Qin et al ., ; Jia and Hu, ).…”

“…Between two PHR events, known as the break phase, low precipitation or high temperature may occur. Therefore, HW events variation is also related to intraseasonal variability of atmospheric circulation (Chen and Lu, ; Xu and Lu, ; Chen et al ., , ; Chen and Zhai, ; Wang et al ., ; Diao et al ., ). Krishnan et al (2008) studied the break phase of the Indian summer monsoon, suggesting an interaction between the intraseasonal variation of the Indian summer monsoon and low-frequency Rossby waves from mid-latitude.…”
