Heat waves in Belgrade and Nis

Abstract: In this study, heat waves at two meteorological stations in Serbia are analysed based on daily maximum temperatures in July and August. The warmest summers as regards heat wave duration and severity occurred within the periods 1946-1952, 1988-1998 (especially 1992-1995) The first-order autoregressive model is applied to generate long series of the daily maximum temperature, from which the relative frequencies of heat waves are estimated. The relationships between the typical and longest heat waves, and the c… Show more

“…All sampling sites were situated at a maximum distance of 30 km from the city of Niš (southern Serbia) to reduce the potential effects of geographic and genetic variation in our data. In urban sites, the lizards inhabited human-altered habitats and were directly exposed to higher temperatures (Unkašević and Tošić 2009) and considerable levels of urban contamination. High contamination with heavy metals, persistent organic pollutants, benzene, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons has been detected in Niš ( Škrbić et al 2002;Nikić et al 2009;Jovanović et al 2011).…”

“…The findings that have been obtained are in keeping with the previously conducted research related to the observation of heat waves and their frequency, the occurrence of extreme temperatures in the hotter part of the year, the occurrence of drought across the region etc. (Drljača, Tošić, & Unkašević, 2009;Prokić, 2018;Unkašević & Tošić, 2009a, 2009b (Tošić & Unkašević, 2013). In addition, this study shows that the years 1998,2000,2003,2011,2016,2015, and 2017 stand out as adverse ones on the territory of Niš in terms of bioclimatic conditions.…”

“…Nevertheless, considering the tendency of ever increasing daily temperatures this is not unlikely to happen in the future. (1998)(1999)(2000)(2001)(2002)(2003)(2004)(2005)(2006)(2007)(2008)(2009)(2010)(2011)(2012)(2013)(2014)(2015)(2016)(2017) Previous studies show that weather and bioclimatic conditions in Serbia have been changing year by year, especially in terms of the increase in maximum daily temperatures, heatwave duration and more and more frequent periods of drought (Basarin et al, 2016;Drljača et al, 2009;Pecelj et al, 2017;Prokić, 2018;Unkašević & Tošić, 2009a, 2009b. All of these lead to more and more adverse conditions that do not only have a negative effect on humans, the quality of life and work in urban and rural areas, but also on local natural ecosystems.…”
