“…Since numerous studies have shown the importance of autoxidative reactions in sediment and deposit formation, a priori, it would be expected that the exclusion of molecular oxygen would suppress such reactions and result in at least some reduction in deposit formation levels. This was clearly not the case with fuel F. In a previous study of autoxidative deposit formation, fuel F appeared to exhibit anomalous behavior relative to other fuels; e.g., it showed no peroxide buildup, heavy deposit formation rates occurred before molecular oxygen was depleted, and it exhibited deposits with an unusual physical appearance (Backman, 1965). This anomalous behavior was attributed to the presence of sizable quantities of disulfides in the fuel as the result of the use of Doctor Sweetening in its preparation.…”
