Abstract:Heat transfer search (HTS) is a novel metaheuristic optimization algorithm that simulates the laws of thermodynamics and heat transfer. In this study, the HTS algorithm is adapted to truss structure optimization. Sizing optimization searches for the minimum weight of a structure subject to stress and displacement constraints. Three truss structures often taken as benchmarks in the optimization literature are selected here in order to verify the efficiency and robustness of the HTS algorithm. Optimization resul… Show more

This paper introduces a new evolutionary computing method inspired by the seed transmission process of garden balsam. Garden balsam, a beautiful and attractive flower, randomly ejects the seeds within a certain range by virtue of mechanical force originating from cracking of mature seed pods, which is different from natural expansion of most species of plants. The seeds scattered to suitable growth area will have greater reproductive capacity in the next generation, followed by iteration until the most suitable point for growth in a particular space is eventually found. This phenomenon can more intuitively show the process of searching the problem solution space in the optimization problem. The garden balsam optimization algorithm proposed in this paper incorporates two different types of search processes and has a mechanism to maintain population diversity. Through the optimization experiment on 24 constrained optimization problems, the results obtained by using this algorithm are compared with those of some known meta-heuristic search algorithms. The statistical analysis of the experimental results has been implemented by Friedman rank test and Holm-Sidak test. The comparison results verify the effectiveness of the algorithm.

“…Since its inception, HTS has been used extensively for solving optimization problems for different applications. Degertekin et al [35] applied the HTS technique for the sizing optimization, particularly for truss structures. Three design examples were discussed in the study which demonstrated that HTS formulated better designs than those found by other state-of-the-art metaheuristic optimization methods.…”
The Activated Tungsten Inert Gas welding (A-TIG) technique is characterized by its capability to impart enhanced penetration in single pass welding. Weld bead shape achieved by A-TIG welding has a major part in deciding the final quality of the weld. Various machining variables influence the weld bead shape and hence an optimum combination of machining variables is of utmost importance. The current study has reported the optimization of machining variables of A-TIG welding technique by integrating Response Surface Methodology (RSM) with an innovative Heat Transfer Search (HTS) optimization algorithm, particularly for attaining full penetration in 6 mm thick carbon steels. Welding current, length of the arc and torch travel speed were selected as input process parameters, whereas penetration depth, depth-to-width ratio, heat input and width of the heat-affected zone were considered as output variables for the investigations. Using the experimental data, statistical models were generated for the response characteristics. Four different case studies, simulating the real-time fabrication problem, were considered and the optimization was carried out using HTS. Validation tests were also carried out for these case studies and 3D surface plots were generated to confirm the effectiveness of the HTS algorithm. It was found that the HTS algorithm effectively optimized the process parameters and negligible errors were observed when predicted and experimental values compared. HTS algorithm is a parameter-less optimization technique and hence it is easy to implement with higher effectiveness.
“…The HTS algorithm has emerged as one of the most efficient methods, and it has been empirically shown to be superior to other MHAs by its authors [42]. HTS and its modified variants have been applied for solving various optimization problems [43][44][45][46][47][48][49]. However, as an efficient optimization method, the report of the applications of HTS algorithm in engineering process optimization is still rarely seen, especially in the areas of chemical process optimization.…”
Dynamic optimization problems (DOPs) are widely encountered in complex chemical engineering processes. However, due to the existence of highly constrained, nonlinear, and nonsmooth environment in chemical processes, which usually causes nonconvexity, multimodality and discontinuity, handling DOPs is not a straightforward task. Heat transfer search (HTS) algorithm is a relative novel metaheuristic approach inspired by the natural law of thermodynamics and heat transfer. In order to solve DOPs efficiently, a new variant of HTS algorithm named quadratic interpolation based simultaneous heat transfer search (QISHTS) algorithm is proposed in this paper. The QISHTS algorithm introduces three modifications into the original HTS algorithm, namely the effect of simultaneous heat transfer search, quadratic interpolation method, and population regeneration mechanism. These three modifications are employed to provide lower computational complexity, as well as to enhance the exploration and exploitation capabilities. Therefore, the ensemble of these modifications can provide a more efficient optimization algorithm with well-balanced exploration and exploitation capabilities. The proposed variant is firstly investigated by well-defined benchmark problems and then applied to solve four chemical DOPs. Moreover, it is compared with different well-established methods existing in the literature. The results demonstrate that QISHTS algorithm has the greatest robustness and precision than other competitors.
