This paper presents the main results of the research developed by the author in his postdoctoral investigations on heat transfer calculations during film condensation inside tubes. The elements studied are combined in an analysis expression that provides a reasonable fit with the available experimental data, which includes a total of 22 fluids, including water, refrigerants and a wide range of organic substances, which condense inside horizontal, inclined and vertical tubes. These experimental data were obtained from the reports of 33 sources. Available data covers tube diameters from 2 to 50 mm, mass flow rates from 3 to 850 kg/(m2s), reduced pressures ranging from 0.0008 to 0.91, values for single-phase from 1 to , Reynolds number for two-phase from 900 to 594390, Reynolds number for single-phase from 65 to 84950 and vapor quality from 0.01 to 0.99. The mean deviation found for the analyzed data for horizontal tubes was 13.4%, while for the inclined and vertical tubes data the mean deviation was 14.9%. In all cases, the agreement of the proposed model is good enough to be considered satisfactory for practical design.

Condensation refers to the change of a substance from a gaseous phase to a liquid phase, an example of which is the condensation of water vapor in nature. Condensation is used in many industries, such as energy generation and seawater desalination. On a general surface, filmwise condensation is the main phenomenon in which gaseous water vapor is condensed in the form of a film. However, film condensation acts as a factor that reduces energy efficiency as the liquid film formed on the surface interferes with heat transfer. A phenomenon opposite to film condensation is dropwise condensation, which is immediately separated after condensation in the form of droplets, and thus a film is not formed, greatly improving heat transfer efficiency. Because of these advantages, many studies have been conducted, and most studies have induced dropwise condensation by modifying the surface to be superhydrophobic. However, in the case of a superhydrophobic surface, it takes a lot of time and money in the process, so there is a great difficulty in increasing the area. Among them, stainless and titanium, which are most materials for industrial heat exchangers, have high robustness, so there are few studies on improving the condensation performance after surface modification due to the difficulty of processing. For this reason, there is a large gap between the currently conducted studies and the actual industry. Our research team succeeded in modifying the surface of a stainless steel and titanium tube the size of an actual heat exchanger into superhydrophobicity with a simple process. We confirmed that the condensation performance was improved on the superhydrophobic surface through experiments under various conditions. By comparing the improvement in the heat transfer performance of stainless steel and titanium under several conditions, the main cause of the performance improvement was proved. This study is expected to play a major role in the eco-friendly future industry where energy efficiency is important by improving the heat transfer performance of stainless and titanium, which are mainly used throughout the industry.

Condensation Heat Transfer Correlation for Micro/Nanostructure Properties of Surfaces

Condensation, which can be observed in nature as a phase change heat transfer phenomenon, is a critical phenomenon in industrial fields such as power generation, water desalination, and environmental control. Many existing studies have applied surfaces with different wettability by controlling the surface topology to enhance condensation heat transfer. However, the industrial applicability is close to zero due to the limited size and shape of surfaces and low supersaturation conditions. Here, we regulate the surface topology of large-area copper tubes, which are representative industrial metals. We fabricated four copper tubes with different surface structures. We analyzed the condensation phenomenon of the modified tube under specific supersaturation conditions by measuring the overall heat transfer coefficient. We analyzed the condensation phenomenon by measuring the condensation heat transfer coefficient. We have recognized that there is a difference between the maximum droplet radius and the droplet detaching frequency depending on the size and shape of the structure. We measured the contact angle and contact angle hysteresis to accurately analyze the droplet behavior on each surface. As a result, we show that there is a correlation between contact angle hysteresis (CAH) and the total heat transfer coefficient, indicating heat transfer performance. These findings can be applied when evaluating surfaces with excellent condensation heat transfer performance for use in real industrial environments, which can dramatically reduce time and cost.
