Heat stress response mechanisms in pollen development

Abstract: Being rooted in place, plants are faced with the challenge of responding to unfavourable local conditions. One such condition, heat stress, contributes massively to crop losses globally. Heatwaves are predicted to increase, and it is of vital importance to generate crops that are tolerant to not only heat stress but also to several other abiotic stresses (e.g. drought stress, salinity stress) to ensure that global food security is protected. A better understanding of the molecular mechanisms that underlie the … Show more

“…Transcriptome profiling offers a global snapshot of the entire RNA molecules, including mRNA, tRNA, rRNA, sRNA, and other non-coding RNA within a cell, tissue, organ, or whole organism at any given time point, which is not possible to be investigated at the genomic level ( Weckwerth et al, 2020 ; Chaturvedi et al, 2021 ). Understanding the transcriptome is crucial for deducing the genome‘s functional elements and revealing the molecular components of cells or tissues, understanding cells‘ responses to developmental and environmental stimuli triggered changes ( Wang et al, 2009 ).…”

“…An outstanding question in the field is why pollen development and function are particularly sensitive to heat ( Rieu et al, 2017 ). Heat sensitivity at meiosis of the pollen mother cell, microspore formation, pollen development, and tapetum development within the anther was reviewed before ( De Storme and Geelen, 2014 ; Rieu et al, 2017 ; Chaturvedi et al, 2021 ). Here we primarily focus on pollen maturation and germination to reveal insights into pollen responses to developmental cues and environmental stress.…”

“…Particularly, research has been focused on plant heat stress (HS) tolerance mechanisms, as higher temperatures have a negative effect on plant growth and production [2,3]. Although plants are susceptible to HS throughout their lifespan, reproductive tissues are specifically characterized by vulnerability to HS [4,5]. Heatwaves are expected to become more frequent in the future, and atmospheric temperature is on course to rise ~4 • C by the end of this century [6,7].…”
