Heat shock proteins and exercise: a primer

Abstract: Heat shock proteins (HSPs) are, in general, prosurvival molecules within the cellular environment, and the overexpression of even just 1 family of HSPs can lead to protection against and improvements after a variety of stressors. Not surprisingly, a fertile area of study has grown out of efforts to exploit the innate biologic behaviour of HSPs. Exercise, because of the inherent physiologic stresses associated with it, is but 1 stimulus that can result in a robust increase in various HSPs in several tissues, no… Show more

“…Heat shock proteins (or stress proteins) are part of an endogenous defence system within the body, which help to protect protein assembly and folding in stressed cells and to maintain cell integrity by acting as molecular chaperones (5). When the cell is severely damaged or necrotic, HSPs are released into the cytoplasm to stimulate infl ammatory cytokine generation (6). Of all HSPs, the HSP70 protein family is known to be the most inducible by stress (7), and the overexpression of renal HSP70 is associated with salt-sensitive hypertension induced by chronic angiotensin II and L-NAME administration (8)(9)(10).…”

“…Because of inherent physiological stress associated with it, physical exercise can benefi cially affect a number of tissues (6). Endurance training up-regulates HSP72 expression in multiple organs, protecting them against heatstroke damage and/or it offsets some adverse effects of diabetes (11,12).…”

“…Molecular weight is used for the classification of HSP (Nobel et al, 2008). They act as cytoprotective proteins and are having the ability to upsurge stress tolerance and enhance survival rates of heat stressed birds (Latchman, 2001).…”

“…Unfortunately, specific sex comparisons were not reported in that study, so it is unknown if there were differences between men and women in the magnitude of the HSP70 response. Furthermore, it is unknown if these authors controlled for the estrus cycle, which may influence the HSP70 response to exercise (29). Also, our study only examined the independent effects of both estrogen and progesterone on skeletal muscle HSP70 expression, and the combined effects of these ovarian sex hormones at physiological concentrations remain unknown.…”
