Heat Pipe for Aerospace Applications—An Overview

Abstract: The paper presents an overview of heat pipes, especially those used in different space missions. Historical perspectives, principles of operations, types of heat pipes are discussed. Several factors have contributed to the science and technology of the present state-of-Art heat pipe leading to the development of loop heat pipes, micro and miniature heat pipes and micro loop heat pipes. The paper highlights the advancement of heat pipe for hypersonic cruise vehicles, loop heat pipes with higher conductance in 1… Show more

“…To date, heat pipes can be fabricated in many different types, including thermosyphons 9 , capillary heat pipes 10 12 , loop heat pipes 13 , 14 , miniature heat pipes 15 and oscillating heat pipes 16 20 . Owing to their advantages of high thermal conductivity and low cost, capillary heat pipes have been widely applied within field likes electronics 21 , aerospace 22 , solar heating water systems 23 – 25 and battery thermal management 26 , 27 . In the capillary heat pipe, the wick structure (as the most important component) not only provides a significantly efficient capillary force to pump condensed liquid back to the evaporator section, it also increases the heat transfer area of the evaporator and condenser sections, which will further affect the heat transfer performance of the heat pipe.…”

“…Depending on the source of driving force for condensate return inside the heat pipe, heat pipes can be distinguished into rotating and non-rotating heat pipes. The non-rotating heat pipe is driven by capillary force or gravity 4 , while the condensate return in a rotating heat pipe is achieved by the rotational motion of the heat pipe body 3 .…”

“…Una de las principales aplicaciones de este estudio es en la industria aeroespacial, debido a las condiciones de operación., donde no existe espacio para un sumidero de calor, un ventilador o una bomba que apoye en la circulación del fluido de trabajo. (Shukla, 2018).…”
