Heat-Front Monitoring in the Qarn Alam Thermal GOGD Pilot

Abstract: Steam is currently being injected into the naturally-fractured Shuaiba carbonate in the Qarn Alam field, Oman in a five-year pilot project operated by Petroleum Development Oman (PDO). The objective of the project is to test the ability of steam to significantly lower the viscosity of the heavy and viscous (16 API, 220 cP) crude and by so doing accelerate the Gas-Oil Gravity Drainage Process which is currently taking place under cold conditions. One of the key monitoring objectives of the the… Show more

“…The critical temperature can be achieved by preheating the reservoir by steam injection. Reservoir preheating in this type of carbonate reservoir could be achieved by steam injection (Nakamura et al 1995;Al-Shizawi et al 1997;Shahin et al 2006;Babadagli and Al-Bemani 2007;Al-Bahlani and Babadagli 2011a, b) or by electrical methods (Davletbaev et al 2011;Kovaleva et al 2010). Note that temperatures required for the Grosmont unit (given that the reservoir pressure is not more than approximately 1500 kPa) is not more than 115 and 55 C for butane and propane, respectively, and this is achievable in a short period of time by the thermal methods mentioned previously.…”

“…Several field applications of steam injection in fractured carbonate reservoirs were reported: Lacq Supérieur, France (Sahuquet et al, 1982), Qarn Alam, Oman (Macaulay et al, 1995;Al-Shizawi et al, 1997;Zellou et al, 2003), Teapot Dome, Wyoming (Doll et al, 1995), South Belridge, California (Johnston et al, 1995), Yates, West Texas (Snell et al, 1999(Snell et al, , 2000. Most projects are related to medium and light oil reservoirs, 32°API for Teapot Dome, 30°API for Yates and to some heavy oil reservoirs, 21°API for Lacq, 16°API for Qarn Alam.…”
