A study has been made of the heterogeneous equilibrium involving
H2‐W‐WO2‐H2O
in the temperature range 500°–1000°C, using a static equilibrium‐type of apparatus. The standard heat of formation and entropy of
WO2
, as calculated from the equilibrium data, was found to be
△H°=−135.0±0.3 normalkcal
and
17.1±1.0 normale.normalu.
The heats of formation of
WO2
and the two higher suboxides were determined by direct combustion.
△H°normalof W18O49 false(WO2.72false)=−183±1 normalkcal/normalmoleW,△H°normalof W20O58 false(WO2.90false)=−193±1 normalkcal/normalmoleW
, and
△H°normalof WO2=−137±1 normalkcal/normalmoleW
.
