Cardiovascular diseases are considered as one of the most common causes of death worldwide. Well-beings of people in the risk groups are monitored by various state-of-the-art tools in clinics and home-care units. Phonocardiograph is one of the them which captures sounds coming from the heart and gives high-quality graphical records (i.e., Phonocardiogram, PCG) of them for examination of pathologies. PCG records have been studied and interpreted in order to localize heart sound segments and classify abnormalities for decades. Moreover, there have been competitions for heart sound classification and researchers have developed successful solutions based on signal processing and machine learning approaches. Main steps of those studies are grouped as preprocessing, segmentation, feature extraction and classification. In this study we present a survey of proposed methods and used datasets. The features used in the literature are listed as time, frequency and time-frequency domains. Performances of different studies are presented and compared. From this perspective, it is concluded that there is still room for automated heart sound analysis. Larger open access PCG databases are required for testing state-of-the-art machine learning methods.

Wearable sensing devices, which are smart electronic devices that can be worn on the body as implants or accessories, have attracted much research interest in recent years. They are rapidly advancing in terms of technology, functionality, size, and real-time applications along with the fast development of manufacturing technologies and sensor technologies. By covering some of the most important technologies and algorithms of wearable devices, this paper is intended to provide an overview of upper-limb wearable device research and to explore future research trends. The review of the state-of-the-art of upper-limb wearable technologies involving wearable design, sensor technologies, wearable computing algorithms and wearable applications is presented along with a summary of their advantages and disadvantages. Toward the end of this paper, we highlight areas of future research potential. It is our goal that this review will guide future researchers to develop better wearable sensing devices for upper limbs.

Wearable Heart Rate Monitoring Device Communicating in 5G ISM Band for IoHT

Advances in wearable device technology pave the way for wireless health monitoring for medical and non-medical applications. In this work, we present a wearable heart rate monitoring platform communicating in the sub-6GHz 5G ISM band. The proposed device is composed of an Aluminium Nitride (AlN) piezoelectric sensor, a patch antenna, and a custom printed circuit board (PCB) for data acquisition and transmission. The experimental results show that the presented system can acquire heart rate together with diastolic and systolic duration, which are related to heart relaxation and contraction, respectively, from the posterior tibial artery. The overall system dimension is 20 mm by 40 mm, and the total weight is 20 g, making this device suitable for daily utilization. Furthermore, the system allows the simultaneous monitoring of multiple subjects, or a single patient from multiple body locations by using only one reader. The promising results demonstrate that the proposed system is applicable to the Internet of Healthcare Things (IoHT), and particularly Integrated Clinical Environment (ICE) applications.
