Heart failure mortality according to acute variations in N-terminal pro B-type natriuretic peptide and cystatin C levels

Abstract: An increase of at least 30% in NT-proBNP levels after hospitalization is related to all-cause mortality in patients with acute heart failure and provides supplementary prognostic information in patients with high levels of CysC. A decrease in NT-proBNP of at least 30% is a desirable target to achieve.

“…Simultaneously, BNP level reveals a positive correlation with left ventricular end-diastolic pressure and with functional impairment as reflected by New York Heart Association (NYHA) class, meant that higher BNP level are associated with a higher mortality in HF [19]. Cystatin C, reflecting glomerular filtration rate (GFR), is associated with an increase in all-cause mortality in HF [20,21]. Abnormal liver function in HF is another predictor of increased mortality [22].…”

“…Although serum NT-proBNP and sCysC are mainly used for the prognosis assessment of heart disease and the prediction of acute cardiac events with AKI,22–26 the diagnostic accuracy of their combination for AKI in ICU remains unknown. We performed a prospective study in the present research to evaluate the performance of serum NT-proBNP and sCysC at ICU admission, both independently and in combination, for AKI determination among critically ill adults.…”
