Hormones such as estrogen, progesterone, and aldosterone all demonstrate vital roles in sustaining auditory function through either the maintenance of cochlear neurons, up/down regulation of critical molecules (i.e., IGF‐1, BDNF, etc.), or generation of the endocochlear potential. With disease and/or age, hormone expression begins to decline drastically, which ultimately affects cochlear structures and the integrity of cochlear cells. The following review explores the latest findings as well as realistic outcomes for hormone therapy treatment in the auditory system. This information could serve as a potential guide for patients considering hormone therapy as a medicinal choice to alleviate the signs of onset of presbycusis—age‐related hearing loss. Additional scientific investigations could also be carried out to further enhance recent findings.

The concept that the growth hormone (GH) is a merely metabolic pituitary hormone with effects on the longitudinal growth of the organism until the end of puberty has been questioned in recent years. We know today that the expression of GH also occurs in virtually all organs and tissues where it performs very important autocrine/paracrine and even intracrine functions. GH acts on all organs and tissues, being particularly important in the development of the brain during the fetal period. In addition, the hormone, after interacting with its membrane receptor, is internalized together with its receptor, allowing it to reach the cell nucleus where it acts as a transcription factor. In the first part of this review, we will analyze the effects of GH on the brain, the cardiovascular system, and the gonadal system, as well as the adverse effects that occur in the GH deficiency not treated in children and adults. GH is absolutely necessary for a normal brain development and also for repairing the nervous system after an injury. Moreover, GH plays a very important role in the cardiovascular system, as well as in normal gonadal functioning.

Interstitial deletions of the long arm of chromosome 20 are very rare, with only 12 reported patients harboring the 20q11.2 microdeletion and presenting a disorder characterized by psychomotor and growth delay, dysmorphisms, and brachy-/clinodactyly. We describe the first case of mosaic 20q11.2 deletion in a 5-year-old girl affected by mild psychomotor delay, feeding difficulties, growth retardation, craniofacial dysmorphisms, and finger anomalies. SNP array analysis disclosed 20% of cells with a 20q11.21q12 deletion, encompassing the 20q11.2 minimal critical region and the 3 OMIM disease-causing genes GDF5, EPB41L1, and SAMHD1. We propose a pathogenic role of other genes mapping outside the small region of overlap, in particular GHRH (growth hormone releasing hormone), whose haploinsufficiency could be responsible for the prenatal onset of growth retardation which is shared by half of these patients. Our patient highlights the utility of chromosomal microarray analysis to identify low-level mosaicism.
