“…The lack of such ®ndings in other rare diseases in which neonatal screening for hearing impairment is recommended, such as bacterial meningitis or a family history of childhood onset hearing loss, may simply be due to statistical variation and does not allow to drop these clinical situations from the list of indications for early hearing impairment screening. Of 36 neonates recovered from septic meningitis (both bacterial and fungal), 2 (5.6%) had severe hearing impairment, which is similar compared to reported rates of sensorineural hearing loss after meningitis in infants [18,19]. A low incidence of a family history of hearing loss among neonates graduating from tertiary care institutions appears to be a common experience in hospital-based neonatal auditory screening programmes [21] and is probably a re¯ection of the way newborn infants are recruited for early auditory screening in hospital-based facilities.…”
