Hearing assessment in Menière's disease

Abstract: In Menière's disease, audiometry results corrected for patient age show an inherent upward-sloping configuration of the mean audiometric curve at all time points during the disease. The hearing pattern differs between unilateral and bilateral disease. The audiometric curve configuration may be an indicator of future bilateral disease.

“…Patients suffering from Ménière's disease typically (but not necessarily) develop initial LF hearing loss (e.g. Belinchon et al 2011), hinting that structures involved in LF sound processing are impaired by the unknown pathophysiological processes behind Ménière's disease, at least in the early stages of the disease. The BP can only be evoked with LF sound (e.g.…”

“…Cochlear MD is considered to be a fluctuating progressive neurosensory hearing loss [according to our own previous studies, mainly at low frequencies; Belinchon et al, 2011] associated with auditory pressure without vestibular symptoms or signs. Vestibular MD is characterized by the appearance of episodic vertigo and instability combined with pressure in one or both ears.…”
