Objectives: Hearing aid usage supports communication and independence; however, many do not use their hearing aids. This study explored the experiences of hearing aid use in adults with mild cognitive impairment or Alzheimer’s disease. Methods: Participants completed semi-structured interviews which were analysed using thematic analysis. Ten people (six males, age range 75–86 years old) with mild cognitive impairment or Alzheimer’s disease who had been fitted with hearing aids were recruited to the study. Results: We identified four major themes: (1) memory and other cognitive barriers to using hearing aids, (2) practical aspects of hearing aids, (3) benefits of hearing aids, and (4) ambivalence towards hearing aids. Conclusions: Participants perceived a significant impact of cognitive impairment on the experience of using hearing aids. This population may benefit from targeted strategies to support use of hearing aids. The findings from this study can inform future research to optimise use of hearing aids in this population.

The regular use of hearing aids (more than 8 hours a day) benefits people in hearing for bettercommunication than those who are less-likely to use hearing aids Objective: The objective of thestudy was to assess the impact of hearing aids on the quality of life of hearing impaired individualsMethods: In this cross-sectional study total 50 participants were recruited by convenient samplingtechnique from Lahore, Pakistan. 50 patients who were diagnosed with hearing loss and wererecommended with hearing aids of both genders were included in the study. The International OutcomeInventory for Hearing Aids (IOI-HA), questionnaire was used for data collection. Data were analyzedthrough Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23.0 Results: In this research 50hearing impaired individuals who were hearing aid users, participated. The mean age of participants was64.10+15.88 years. Among which 25 (50%) were males and 25(50%) were females. The average time ofhearing aid use was 3.88 hours, majority of patients responded that hearing aid helped quite a lot in thedaily routine (mean score of IOI-HA, 3.62), have moderate difficulty in residual activity (mean score of IOIHA,3.26), moderately satisfied with their hearing aid (mean score of IOI-HA, 3.28), moderately affect theparticipation restriction (mean score of IOI-HA, 3.20), impact of their hearing loss bothered moderately(mean score of IOI-HA, 3.14) and quality of life (QOL) was very much better (3.90). There was insignificantassociation between the QOL of males and females (p-value>0.05) Conclusions: It was concluded fromthe study that the hearing aids have a greater impact on the quality of life and socio-economic aspectsof hearing impaired individuals. Hearing loss is such a problem, which separates certain community ofhearing impaired individuals from the normal population. Individuals with hearing impairment not onlyhave to face personal communication problems but also it affects their health, independency and qualityof life in their daily routine.

Introdução: A perda auditiva pode impedir ou limitar indivíduos a cumprir seu papel social, podendo acarretar em danos emocionais e até profissionais, pois estes indivíduos enfrentam uma realidade social que é excludente. O paciente com déficit auditivo, muitas vezes, torna-se incapaz de se comunicar ou de ser entendido adequadamente levando a frustração e redução da qualidade de vida. Objetivo: Identificar a relação entre déficits auditivos e seu impacto na qualidade de vida. Metodologia: Tal estudo consiste em uma revisão integrativa da literatura. A seleção de artigos foi feita no Google Acadêmico, Scielo, Portal de Periódicos da CAPES e Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde buscando-se estudos de 2016 a 2020 com as palavras-chave "qualidade de vida" AND "deficiência auditiva" AND "audição", encontrados na base Descritores em Ciências da Saúde (DeCS). Foram selecionados 15 artigos que se relacionavam diretamente ao objetivo da pesquisa. Resultados: A deficiência auditiva além de reduzir a capacidade de perceber e discriminar sons, também influencia na compreensão da linguagem, afetando a socialização do sujeito e sua relação com familiares e conhecidos. Tal déficit pode gerar um transtorno psicológico, em que o indivíduo pode isolar-se ou ser isolado pela sociedade, momento onde há redução da qualidade de vida, com sentimento de vergonha, impotência, tristeza profunda ou até um quadro depressivo. Conclusões: É de extrema importância que o déficit auditivo seja reconhecido como um problema relativamente frequente em idosos e como um fator que pode impactar negativamente a qualidade de vida do indivíduo que possui perda auditiva. Assim, recursos devem ser destinados para o tratamento dessa população e consequentemente haverá incremento nas condições de saúde e qualidade de vida.

Abstract: Hearing aids are associated with better QoL than having HL and going without aids. Clinical psychologists can improve coping among those with HL and motivate hearing aid use.
