Hearing Aid Use for Children With Hearing Loss: A Literature Review

Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this study was to complete a comprehensive literature review related to hearing aid use during early childhood. Method A rapid evidence assessment was completed to provide a summary of information published or presented between 1980 and 2012. A qualitative assessment was completed for all eligible material, emergent themes related to hearing aid use were synthesized, and a narrative summary was generated. … Show more

“…This study adds to the growing body of knowledge (Martin et al, 2005;Moeller et al, 2009;Walker et al, 2013;Muñ oz and Hill, 2015; that has brought greater awareness to the challenges for families in establishing early amplification use. Of particular importance, this study adds information specific to an early-identified cohort of children with minimal hearing loss.…”

“…Recent research investigating hearing aid use either through data logging in digital hearing aids or using parent report has drawn attention to the challenges in achieving consistent amplification use in young children across the full spectrum of severity of hearing loss (Jones and Launer, 2011;Walker et al, 2013;Muñ oz and Hill, 2015;. Jones and Launer (2011) reported an average of 5.5 hr per day of hearing aid use based on objective data logging records for approximately 5,000 children from birth to 19 yr of age in the United States with 40% of children in the 0-4 yr age range achieving ,4 hr daily hearing aid use.…”

“…One finding of interest related to support for amplification use in the early stages of care was that parents preferred regular audiology visits combined with regular check-ins by their audiologist (defined as 1-to 2-month intervals) outside the onsite clinical visits. The challenges of consistent hearing aid use for young children have been well highlighted in the literature (Walker et al 2013;Muñoz & Hill 2015), and milder degree of hearing loss is one of the factors affecting amount of use.…”

“…Second, only four publications addressed factors influencing hearing aid use. Munoz and Hill (2015) concluded that further research was needed to address factors that influence hearing aid use such as parent challenges with the daily management of hearing aids and parent's perceptions, concerns, and beliefs about their children's hearing needs.…”

“…In addition to the uncertainty around what defines consistent hearing aid use, little is known regarding what factors affect consistent hearing aid use in young CWHL. One narrative literature review published by Munoz and Hill (2015) investigated hearing aid use in CWHL. From their thematic analysis, three themes emerged, namely, hours of hearing aid use, factors influencing hearing aid use, and suggestions for improving hearing aid use.…”
