Poultry industry is confronted to different hurdles which are blamed for the decline in the nutrients supplements for humans. One of the hurdles is the oxidative stress, which is responsible for the reduction of gut morphology and growth performance in the poultry birds. The present study was performed to explore the impact of inorganic selenium (sodium selenite). Day old chicks were kept in a control environment. At day 7, five groups were made with four replicas in each group based on the diet being offered. Group A, the positive control group fed with normal basal diet group B was termed as negative control group offered basal diet + dexamethasone and group C, D and E was offered 0.2mg/kg, 0.3mg/kg, and 0.4mg/kg of basal diet, respectively. The trial lasted for 35-days and on the last day two chickens from each replicate were slaughtered (a cumulatively eight chickens from each group). Samples from different regions (duodenum, jejunum, and ileum) of the small intestine were collected and kept in the fixatives. Slices from each part were stained with H and E stain to make it fit for microscopy. Picture were taken with different magnifications, i.e., 4X, 10X and 40X and histo-morphometry was done through Pixel-Pro (Labomed America Inc). The statistical analysis was through IBM SPSS (Statistics.V22.X86). The present study concluded that selenium improves the intestinal morphology i.e. villus height, villus width, villus surface area showed better growth(P≤0.05) in the selenium supplemented groups. The FCR initially did not differ (P≥0.05) among the groups but toward the end it was comparatively better (P≤0.05) in selenium supplemented groups. The relative body weight of different organs i-e liver, gizzard, heart, pancreas, and proventriculus etc. showed significant (P≤0.05) results in each of selenium-supplemented groups. Overall, 0.3 mg/kg (Basal diet) of selenium showed better results with respect to the positive control group.

The objective of this current study was to examine the effects of turmeric oil as a dietary supplement on some haematological and serum biochemical indices of broiler chicken. A total of two hundred 1-day-old broiler chicks (Ross 308 strain) were randomly distributed to five treatments of 4 replicates consisting of 10 birds each in a completely randomized design. Birds in treatment 1 (T1) were fed basal diet + 0% turmeric oil (TOL), T2, T3, T4 and T5 were fed basal diet supplemented with TOL at 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.3% and 0.4% respectively. Basal diet was formulated to meet the nutritional requirements of birds according to NRC (1994). Clean feed and water were also provided ad libitum throughout the experiment which lasted for 56 days. Results obtained showed that all the haematological parameters (Pack cell volume, haemoglobin, red blood cell, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular heamoglobin, mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration, white blood cells and its differentials) were significantly (P˂0.05) different among the treatments. Serum biochemical parameters (Total protein, albumin, globulin, cholesterol, alanine transaminase, aspartate transaminase) were influenced by the dietary supplementation of TOL (P˂0.05). Cholesterol level decreases as the dietary supplementation of TOL increases (P˂0.05). However, all values were within the normal physiological range for birds. It was concluded that TOL contains several bioactive chemicals which confers it the ability to perform multiple biological functions.

Supplementing Broiler Chicken Diet with Uvaria chamae Leaf Meal: Effects on Immune Response, Gut Microbial Population and Growth Performance

The purpose of this experiment was to determine how supplementing Uvaria chamae leaf meal (UCLM) affects growth performance and a few hematological markers of broiler chicken. For a 56-day study, 500 one-day-old (Ross 307) broiler chicks were randomly assigned to five treatments, each consisting of 100 birds. Standard feed was formulated according to the nutritional standards for broilers. Treatment 1 (T1) was fed a standard diet with 0.25 g/kg oxytetracycline while T2, T3, T4, and T5 were provided a standard diet supplemented with UCLM at 5g, 10g, 15g, and 20g, respectively. The treatments had a significant impact on body weight gain, feed conversion ratio and mortality. In contrast, the mortality rate and Escherichia coli counts were higher in T1 and T2 compared to other groups, whereas body weight gain was higher in T2, T3, T4, and T5 compared to T1. Regarding crude fiber digestibility and average daily feed intake, there was no statistically significant difference. The dry matter, crude protein, ether extract, ash digestibility, hemoglobin, packed cell volume, red blood cell, lymphocytes, monocytes, immunoglobulin A, Y, and M and Lactobacillus sp. counts of the birds supplemented with UCLM at 2 g/kg (T2), 4 g/kg (T3), 6 g/kg (T4), and 8 g/kg (T5) were similar but significantly greater than those of T1 (0.25 g/kg oxytetracycline). It was determined that broilers' diets can include up to 20 g/kg of UCLM supplementation without harming the birds' health.
