Healthy Skin Wins: A Glowing Pressure Ulcer Prevention Program That Can Guide Evidence‐Based Practice

Abstract: Background: In 2013, an observational survey was conducted among 242 in-patients in a community hospital with a pressure ulcer (PU) prevalence of 34.3%. An evidence-based pressure ulcer prevention program (PUPP) was then implemented including a staff awareness campaign entitled "Healthy Skin Wins" with an online tutorial about PU prevention.

“…The most common study design was RCTs ( n = 6). Regarding the PU preventive interventions, most of the featured studies focused on support surfaces, health professional's education, multiple intervention programmes, repositioning and early mobilisation, preventive skincare, prophylactic dressings, remind systems on patient care plan, and risk‐assessment tools . According to the care setting where the studies were carried out, most of them ( n = 17) were developed in intensive care units (ICU) followed by medicine ( n = 6), geriatrics ( n = 2), surgical ( n = 2), orthopaedics ( n = 2), oncology ( n = 1), rehabilitative ( n = 1), community hospital ( n = 1), and other specific units ( n = 4).…”

“…Multiple intervention programmes and care bundles are a set of evidence‐based interventions that when performed together had a better and positive impact on patient outcomes, when compared with individual interventions . Regarding Table , most of the multiple intervention programmes ( n = 7) were effective in decreasing the incidence of PUs . One study did not decrease the incidence of PUs with statistical significance, but was successful in changing clinical practice in PU prevention …”

“…Studies indicate that high rates of PI, especially in at-risk populations, represent a challenge for health professionals in the implementation of preventive actions and use of treatment technological advances. 10,14,15 Among the resources for the treatment, the use of dressings with different types of covering is considered the conventional therapy. They benefit the healing process in the mid-and long term, depending on the staging, based on the degree of lesion tissue destruction, and the patient's conditions.…”
