Healthy donor effect: its magnitude in health research among blood donors

Abstract: The findings strongly point to the presence of a healthy donor effect when comparing donors with the general population and active versus lapsed donors. The healthy donor effect was less pronounced within active donors, when comparing long- and short-career donors. Therefore, health research should primarily be carried out within active donors.

“…Furthermore, it is important to keep in mind that the donor population is a relatively healthy sample of the Dutch population and that the Dutch climate is temperate. 37 Our results may therefore not apply to individuals ineligible or unwilling to donate blood. Nonetheless, our reported associations increased in strength at higher temperatures and at older age.…”

“…As a result, donors are composed of a relatively healthy group of individuals. 13,14 In addition, the huge amount of prospectively collected donation data measured before each blood donation, including Hb levels and blood pressure, enabled us to precisely assess the strength of the association between Hb levels and blood pressure in healthy persons.…”

“…One large limitation of our research is that the results describe an association but not a causal mechanism [84,85]. Adult parents who voluntarily think about organ donation are not a random sample of society and, instead, differ in many ways from the general population [86][87][88][89][90]6,91]. These unmeasured differences are not isolated to organ donation and likely correlate with other knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors shared among family members that contribute to health protection and injury prevention [92][93][94][95][96].…”
