The technical performance of a hybrid 'solar window' that provides heating in addition to daylighting is evaluated. A wavelength selective film is coupled with a compound parabolic concentrator (CPC) to reflect and concentrate the infrared portion of the solar spectrum onto a tubular absorber while transmitting the visible portion of the spectrum into the interior space. The optical performance of the CPC/selective film is predicted using a Monte Carlo RayTracing model. An adaptive concentrator geometry based on asymmetrical truncation of CPCs is analyzed for vertical windows. The predicted visible transmittance is 0.61 to 0.67 for double glazed windows. The solar heat gain coefficient and the U-factor are comparable to existing glazing technology. The annual thermal efficiency for double glazed windows based on use in Minneapolis, MN is 19-24%.

Purpose: Quality of life (QoL) for elderly residents of care and attention (C&A) homes has become an important consideration given the increasingly aging population. Due to the number of hours such residents spend indoors, the quality of the facilities can contribute to their day to day QoL. This study investigates the effect of facilities management (FM) on the QoL of Chinese elderly people living in C&A homes.Design/Methodology/Approach: A survey of perceived satisfaction with the components of FM and QoL was carried out with a sample of residents. A total of 18 FM components and five QoL domains, including physical health, independence, psychological health, social relationships and living environment, as well as overall QoL were identified. Findings:The findings show that; (1) physical health is influenced by accessibility, doors and windows and signage; (2) independence can be improved by enhancing accessibility, water supply, lighting and ventilation; (3) accessibility, water supply, distance and doors and windows all predict psychological health; (4) social relationships are improved by lighting and ventilation; (5) distance impacts positively on living environment and (6) overall QoL is predicted by lighting, ventilation, accessibility, doors and windows, handrails, recreation and signage.Originality/Value: The study recommends that designers and facilities managers review the micro-climate settings to harness available natural lighting and ventilation, introduce bimetallic strips to the heating systems to maintain a suitable water temperature and install large, easy to understand and graphic signage for straightforward wayfinding in C&A homes.

e shape of a building largely contributes to its energy consumption. e current study utilized metrics of surface-to-volume ratio, surface-to-floor ratio, area-to-perimeter ratio, and volume ratio to evaluate building energy performance. Also, the paper focused on the relation between the air-conditioned room and non-air-conditioned room. is approach affects both the design stages of the floor plan and the main designing factors that decide which spaces would become air-conditioned spaces such as those mostly occupied by residents or non-air-conditioned space such as staircases and elevators. e heating load and cooling load were calculated using the new equation based on the location of non-air-conditioned spaces and envelope ratio facing the outdoor. Both the width-depth ratio and envelope ratio were analyzed using the IES_V.E (Integrated Environmental Solutions Virtue Environment) program. It turns out that, as the non-air-conditioned spaces increase, both heating load and cooling load were reduced.
