Maternity care assistants (MCAs) are becoming a necessary part of the healthcare workforce as the workload of the midwife increases and the number of qualified midwives falls. These MCAs have been under fire by the press recently for taking on duties not suited to their experience or qualifications. This article will consider what they are are actually allowed to do in the field of midwifery and and how their developing role will benefit themselves, their colleagues and most of all, their patients.
