Labor Market Inequalities in Egypt : Some Causes and Consequences for Youth and Women

This thesis examines aspects of labor market inequalities faced by women and youth, answering three main research questions: First, what is the gendered impact of commuting time on the labor market outcomes? Second, what is the gendered effect of transitioning from non-employment to standard or nonstandard employment on the mental health outcomes of youth? Third, what is the effect of family formation events on the occupational status of women? My cumulative dissertation consists mainly of three empirical articles that address these research questions. Article 1 examines the gendered effect of commuting time on labor market outcomes. Using panel data from Egypt’s Labor Market Panel Survey for the years 2006 and 2012, I estimate the effect using an instrumental variable approach coupled with fixed effects and random effects. This paper provides new insights into the effect of travel time to work, in light of the importance of time poverty, especially for women burdened by care and household work Article 2 investigates the impact of transitions into permanent, temporary, casual/seasonal, and informal employment relative to non-employment on the psychological health of youth. This article uses panel data from the Survey of Young People in Egypt for the years 2009 and 2014 and estimates matched difference-in-differences to examine the impact of various employment transitions on mental illness. I estimate the gendered effect of various employment transitions (standard and nonstandard employment) on the extensive and intensive margins of mental illness for youth. Article 3 measures the marriage and motherhood penalties, particularly the impact of these family transitions on occupational status. Using retrospective data from Egypt’s Labor Market Panel Survey for 2018, this article studies the relationship between family formation and occupational status. I estimate fixed-effects and fixed-effects individual slopes panel models coupled with dummy impact functions to identify the impact of marriage and childbearing on the International Socio-Economic Index of occupational status. Overall, the thesis contributes to understanding the situation of women and young women in the labor market. It can be concluded that women and young women suffer from labor market disadvantages concerning their labor supply and mental health. However, outcomes are positive when considering marriage and motherhood’s effects on occupational status. These results show the importance of understanding the complete picture of women in the labor market and accounting for their intrinsic characteristics when studying their outcomes.

This study checks the hypothesis that sustainable well-being is a determinant factor of fertility through the application of a multiversal method based on the assumptions of Vibration of Effects (VoE) model of multiversal sampling on the Italian Equitable and Sustainable Well-being (BES) dataset. For 48 social indicators of well-being, adopting the Province as statistical unit, the estimate of linear effect has been systematically sampled 1024 times. This multiversal sampling allows to estimate the component of the hypothetical variability of the estimate of the effect size that depends on the theoretical choices of the analysis. This component is commonly underestimated, hidden, or ignored in regular multivariate analysis or classical bootstrapping. Results do not allow to claim that any of the 48 social indicators is a robust linear predictor of fertility. Indicators associated with high statistical significance are also at risk of misleading the causal relationship. Implications for policy-making and the future direction of the research on BES are discussed in the conclusive remarks.

The Moderator Role of Financial Well-Being on the Effect of Job Insecurity and the COVID-19 Anxiety on Burnout: A Research on Hotel-Sector Employees in Crisis

During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, which is caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), hotel-sector employees attempted to cope with the fear of becoming infected; however, they were also faced with job insecurity. Both the anxiety over COVID-19 and the risk of job insecurity have affected the employees’ economic and social conditions as well as their mental state. The present study examined the effect of COVID-19 anxiety and job insecurity perceptions on the burnout levels of hotel-sector employees and the moderator role of the employees’ financial well-being on this relationship. The study was conducted by collecting data from 396 participants who worked in 17 different five-star hotels in Antalya, Turkey. Because of social isolation and social distancing rules, our research data were obtained using an online questionnaire to avoid close contact with other people. The findings showed that COVID-19 anxiety and perceptions of job insecurity had negative effects on hotel employees in the form of mental burnout. In addition, we determined that as an individual characteristic, financial well-being was a moderator variable that affected the severity of burnout based on COVID-19 anxiety and job insecurity. The research findings exhibited theoretical and practical contributions for decision makers and researchers.
