Health survey on the Ilha da Conceição, state of Rio de Janeiro: I. Study design and report of selected demographic and environmental characteristics

Abstract

U nder the auspices of the P artn ers of the AUiance Program , 'a n exchange pro gram was developed betw een the U niver sity of M aryland School of Medicine (Baltim ore, M aryland, U.S.A.) and the Facul dade de M edicina da U niversidade Federal Flum inense (Niterói, Estado do Rio, B razil). W ithin t'he fram ew ork of this ex change program , a team of th ree medicai students and a faculty supervisor from the University of M aryland joined w ith stu d ents and faculty of the U niversidade Fe deral Flum inense to conduct a h ealth su r vey in a defined area of Niterói. I t is the purpose of th is report to review the developm ents of this exchange program , com m ent on the design of tiie study, and present some prelim inary results of the survey.The state of M aryland and th e Estado do Rio de Janeiro are paired as sister states under the P artn ers of the AIliance
